 SAFE Member spotlight

Paula Lazrus, Marina Papa-Sokal, Sarah Pickman This month, the spotlight shines on SAFE Members Paula Lazrus and Marina Papa-Sokal and Sarah Pickman.

Paula and Marina contributed essays to Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, And the Antiquities Trade (Cultural Heritage Studies), a comprehensive anthology featuring top international experts on the commodification of artifacts, the burgeoning illicit antiquities trade, and international efforts to combat looting. SAFE Advisor Neil Brodie co-edited the collection.

Sarah Pickman, an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, contributed to SAFE's Say YES to Italy campaign as an intern in 2005. This past fall, her article on the destruction of a Medieval Armenian cemetery in Djulfa, Azerbaijan on the Archaeology website led to an invitation from documentary filmmaker Simon Maghakyan to write the script for The New Tears of Araxes. Now on view at YouTube, the film has received rave reviews. Thank you, Sarah, for rejoining SAFE as a Member.

Bravo, everybody. What are you working on?

 You said ?YES to Cyprus"

In our last newsletter, we urged readers to write the U.S. State Department in support of import restrictions on ancient Cypriot coins. Thank you to all who submitted letters and provided input to SAFE. Together, we sent a strong message to the State Department about the importance of protecting cultural heritage and the ramifications of allowing Cypriot coins unrestricted into the U.S. Stay tuned for their decision...

Rakowitz art Artist Michael Rakowitz's The invisible enemy should not exist explores the fate of the artifacts still missing after the 2003 looting of the Iraq Museum. Using information from the University of Chicago?s Oriental Institute and Interpol databases, Rakowitz reconstructed the artifacts using packaging from Middle Eastern foodstuffs and local Arabic newspapers, creating an intricate narrative installation.

Location: Lombard-Freid Projects, 531 West 26th Street, 2nd floor, New York City

Looking for inspiration for our Student Illustration and Photography Competition? Hurry down to Chelsea. The exhibit ends Saturday, February 17.
