 How the US responds
 
As a party to the 1970 UNESCO convention, China has requested new import restrictions on antiquities. SAFE hopes the State Department's decision to delay a ruling is a sign of further consideration and not the result of political or economic pressure.

Italian stop sign Two other parties to UNESCO, Italy and Switzerland, have made an official agreement designed to stem the flow of illicit antiquities between the nations. Requiring stricter proof of provenance for goods stored in Swiss warehouses, the agreement also strengthens Italy's ability to reclaim stolen artifacts.
