Have your cupcake and eat it too!
March 2009
Greetings!

I know most of my readers want to make a living from doing what they love.  I also know that I hear too many excuses!  That may sound harsh, but it's true.  I regularly hear excuses like, "I don't have time to work on my business because I have a "real" job.", and "I will start selling my artwork once I get business cards printed and a website up." This month's article is about really looking at what you are doing to make your dreams come true.  As we "spring forward" (the time change and the season) I want to inspire you to spring towards your dreams too.

The Only Step You Have to Worry About is the First

By Laura Bray

Too many people put their dreams on hold because they think they have to have EVERYTHING in order before they can begin.  Websites need to be up, business cards made, the list goes on and on.  Then there's the time and money factors.  Many of you have day jobs and/or limited resources.  But how honest are you really being?  What's really holding you back from working on your dream?  Let's address a couple of your excuses and see if you can overcome them:

Websites/Business Materials Etc:

If you have been reading this newsletter for any amount of time, you have seen it change.  My website too.  I know that branding is important.  But I also knew that moving forward was the most important thing to do.  My look and brand has changed over the past couple of years, but I didn't let the fact that I wasn't quite sure what my look was stop me from starting my business.  I knew that the most important thing was to get started.  Don't obsess!  Just do it.  I use a website host that has easy to change templates, so I can work on my website a little at a time.  As for business cards, my first set were printed on Avery Ink Jet business cards at home.  Until I found my look, I printed them myself.  So what can you do today to get started?  First, make a list of all the things you think you HAVE to do to get started.  Pick one.  Find the easiest way to accomplish it and do it.  Tomorrow, try the next item.  As you look at the list, are any of the items really an excuse to not start your business today?

Time

I know we are all busy.  Some of you have day jobs.  I stay home full time with my daughter.  I only get to work on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am until 11am while she is in preschool and on weekends.  But if your dream is really important you CAN find the time to work on it.  It may only be a few minutes a day. I recently heard someone say that if you took just one hour day to work on something, you would 365 hours under your belt by the end of the year.  It adds up, doesn't it?  Maybe you are tired.  Maybe you are watching too much TV.  Decide how much time you WILL dedicate to your dream EVERYDAY.  Schedule it in.  Begin.

Money

With today's resources, money really isn't a big issue.  You can have an online presence for fre*e with blogs.  As a creative person, you can design & print your own marketing materials.  The list goes on.  Look at all the things you need to do to get started on your dream and think of ways you can do it for less.  As I said, you are creative.  I know you can do it!

These are just some of the reasons people tell me they can't live their dreams.  What are your excuses?  Do you want help working through them?  I'm taking on a few coaching clients this year and to launch my program, I'm offering a fr*ee, 30 minute coaching call to discuss one of your excuses and how you can overcome it.  To sign-up email me at laura@katydid-designs.com and put "My Excuse" in the subject line.  I'll contact you to arrange a time for your call.  Please note that you will call me and any phone charges are your responsibility.  I really will work with you for 30 minutes.  It won't just be a commercial for my services, but I do ask you to think about working with me if you feel that the call was beneficial.  I'm offering VERY affordable coaching sessions for all my ezine readers.  See below for the pricing!  This fre*e call offer is only good until March 31, 2009, so email me today!
