From the Assistant Principal
New on Campus: Skateboard Racks located on the outside walls of our MUR. Thanks to our Student Body for funding these state-of-the-art racks that will keep students' skateboards locked up and secure throughout the school day. Boarders are required to bring their own padlock to lock up their boards. Anyone with a question on how best to do this can ask Mr. Thomas, he's already problem-solved with several skateboard enthusiasts.

Recommended media resource for parents: Have you ever wondered if a movie or popular novel was appropriate for your child's age group? Had you tried to learn more about some video games but became frustrated on how to do so? I encourage parents to visit the website for Commonsense Media at: www.commonsensemedia.org to find these answers and more. The popular trilogy and soon to be released movie, The Hunger Games, is featured here on this site. Bookmark this website and share any good tips you may find with other concerned parents.

Cell Phones on campus: It is time again for the Assistant Principal to remind all families about our Cell Phone Policy. You can read our policy in the Directory under, " La Entrada School Handbook", page 120. In short, if your child must bring a cell phone to school, the cell phones must be turned off and kept either in a locker or a backpack during school hours. A cell phone out during school hours will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the school day. Should the same student have their cell phone confiscated a second time, the phone will only be returned to a parent or guardian. A third infraction will result in the cell phone no longer being allowed on campus. Students are to only use a land line during school hours and may come into the office if they need to make a phone call.

Parents can be helpful by not texting or calling their child during school hours, as well as having a discussion with their child(ren) around proper cell phone use during school hours. A cell phone can do much more than simply make a phone call and therefore requires all students to adhere to these rules in order to ensure a safe campus environment for all. Students who have demonstrated cell phone misconduct will be disciplined.

From our counselor

Youth Action Council (YAC) a lunchtime enrichment club dedicated to community and school service has taken part in some very exciting projects this year! YAC started off the year with students choosing to write cards to military veterans. The kids in grades 4-8 made Valentines Day cards which were later handed out to all our veterans at the local Veterans Hospital. Later in the year the kids came up with the idea of writing uplifting letters and making friendship bracelets for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. We just completed the letters and the bracelets, and can not wait to bring them to the Ronald McDonald House! Our last meeting is coming up on April 12th during lunch time. In this meeting we will be making posters to get the word out about My New Red Shoes. My New Red Shoes is a charity that supplies low income families with new shoes and clothing. In April, La Entrada with the support of YAC will hold a shoe drive to help support this cause. Please let your children know that if they wish to join us for our last YAC meeting on April 12th, they are more than welcome!

Items needed for science projects

Do you have empty "barbeque" propane lighters (wand-style) hanging around ? What about old cassette tapes with cases (actually...just the cases!)? Don't throw 'em away...recycle...re-use! I am collecting these items for some science projects I have in mind...can you help out? I need at least 20 of each. If you have questions, please contact Christine Evans, 8th grade science teacher at cevans@llesd.org.

Inspiring the Scientists, Engineers and Innovators of Tomorrow

La Entrada The Las Lomitas Education Foundation is proud to adopt as its 2012 Fund A Need, the creation of the Las Lomitas Science and Engineering Education Resource Initiative (SEERI).

This is part of the effort to implement the new Strategic Plan adopted by the District this year.
The mission of SEERI will be to instill in the students of the Las Lomitas School District the inspiration, confidence and foundation necessary to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) academic courses in secondary school and college. SEERI will be both a physical space on the Las Lomitas campus, and a district wide program of science enrichment supporting all K-8 students. At Las Lomitas, a remodeled classroom will serve as a resource center and be outfitted with equipment, technology, resources and supplies that will expand and enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for students and faculty.

Your donations, raised through Fund A Need will go toward:
* Supplementing and expanding the innovative science program at both Las Lomitas and La Entrada, sparking and nurturing students' enthusiasm for STEM learning
* Equipping our students with multiple learning strategies, fostering teamwork and teaching the application of theory in ways that will be useful for lifelong learning
* Providing advanced tools, equipment and professional development to teachers for
expansion of existing curriculum and enrichment in new areas such as engineering and robotics
* Preparing students in K-5 for the rigorous and excellent middle school science program,
enriching the 6-8 program
* Finding new ways to make science and engineering HANDS ON AND FUN!

We have an ambitious goal of raising $200,000. Your donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated. Please help us expand science education for our children by donating here.

For families new to the district, Fund A Need is an annual tradition linked to the Spring Auction. Typically, those who plan to attend the Auction bid on Fund A Need during the Live Auction at the main event, this year named "London 2012", scheduled for Saturday, May 19. Tickets for London 2012 go on sale April 6. Be on the lookout for your invitation as tickets sell out quickly! We also have a significant number of donors who prefer to contribute to FAN online. FAN is an extremely important part of our mission...last year FAN funded six new portable classrooms, contributing to the reduction of class sizes. FAN is a very powerful way for parents to make a specific and immediate difference in their children's education.
Contributions are 100% tax deductible. We appreciate your continued support!

Research-Based Parent Education Courses from Challenge Success

How much help is too much when it comes to homework?

How do I decide which extracurricular activities are best for my kid?

Is it okay for my 13-year-old to be on Facebook every day?

If you're not sure how to answer these questions, you're not alone. At Challenge Success, we hear regularly from parents who are trying to be the best parents they can be, but who aren't always sure what to do. Our first series of classes, Raising Well-Balanced Children in a Fast-Paced World, is now available in one of our in-person workshops and online. If you are the parent of an elementary or middle school-aged child and are wondering how to raise healthier, happier kids and help your family feel more connected, then these are the classes for you.

Online: Our interactive online course allows you to work at your own pace and on your own schedule. You may purchase our entire 7-session course or individual course sessions.

In-Person: This 6-week workshop is provided by a trained Challenge Success Parent Education Facilitator with guest appearances by the Challenge Success co-founders. Our next course begins at Stanford University on April 25th.
