Greetings La Entrada Families!

As we ring in the new year, we don't want to let 2011 go without recognizing some very important volunteers who have put in countless hours supporting some of our PTA programs. Taylor Perkins and Karen Zupsic did a truly outstanding job on the Holiday Fair this year! They also had an exceptional team of parent volunteers. We're not sure who was had more fun....the kids or the parents?!? Melissa Jordan and Paula Hamilton used their creative talents to spearhead the Art Note Cards this year and we hope you're enjoying many opportunities to use your children's art work when you need to send someone a note.

Moving into 2012, we just had our annual Spelling Bee last Friday and we'd like to thank Sandra Cheek and Esther Dicks for their efforts in putting on such a well run and exciting event. We are also looking forward to the Science Fair coming up this week on Thursday evening.

We would like to extend a very enthusiastic invitation to everyone to attend our next PTA General Meeting on Wednesday, February 8, at 9:15 am in the MUR. Please join us for wonderful coffee, delicious treats and an opportunity to connect with other parents. In addition to this, we will have some some special guests to inform and excite us about our new Strategic Plan that will be guiding our children's education in the coming years. Mark your calendars now!!

We hope everyone has a fabulous week!

Living with a Teenager by Robyn Alagona MFT, Site Director at Gunn High School

It can be difficult to predict daily life with a teenager. Teenagers have a reputation for being unpredictable, capricious, even inflexible. As an adult, living with an adolescent, it can feel frustrating, anxiety-producing and worrisome to experience the erratic changes teens go through in a week, a day or even an hour. However unsettling this may feel, you'll be happy to know, this is perfectly normal behavior for a teenager. It is unsettling for us, because, as adults we often forget what it felt like to be in an adolescent body, experiencing unknown, overwhelming emotions and not knowing how to effectively communicate our own experiences. These memories fade in part, because many of them are painful. Adolescence is a time of great metamorphosis. Even the smallest shifts can feel enormous. It is our job as parents, caregivers, teachers, counselors and mentors of teens, to understand and acknowledge the challenges that they face and to help them make sense of this time.

The first step in doing this is to acknowledge our own reactions to the challenges of living with a teenager. As mentioned before, this can feel frustrating, overwhelming, even insurmountable at times. But, as adults we need to manage our own feelings, so our teens have the space to experience theirs. You may be asking, how do I do this? Well, first and foremost, you, the caregiver, must first care for yourself. You must remember to do the things that keep you balanced and centered, prepared (as well as you can be) to handle whatever walks through the door.

So much of what adolescents want, is to be seen, heard and understood, as their own, unique selves. This concept can be difficult for parents. It is hard to watch children grow up and differentiate themselves from us, their families. This, however, is one of the most crucial developmental goals of this stage of life; to become an individual, who can go out into the world, eventually without us and thrive.

Understanding and integrating your teen's need to be an individual can be extremely challenging, but it is one of the major goals of parenthood, during this phase. The important thing to remember is that this is not about getting it right all of the time, it is about being willing to try. When we model for our children, at any age, that we can handle life's challenges, that we can make shifts and practice tolerance for things that frustrate us, we are setting the best kind of example, one of flexibility, maturity, thoughtfulness and a willingness to grow.

The 2012 SPRING AUCTION is just around the corner on Saturday May 19 and

WE NEED YOU to help make it the best event ever!!

Help us create a fantastic auction portfolio by soliciting or donating wonderful items, events or experiences to the live, silent and online auctions.

All item donations are tax deductible.

Donating an item is easy and can be done via our online donation form at our website.  Click on  www.llef.org to donate now.

Need some ideas to help kick start the brainstorming?  Here are a few:

  • Tickets from your season subscription: sports, concerts, theater, etc.
  • A week or weekend at your cabin, condo or vacation home
  • Sponsor a one-of-a-kind event or getaway that we can't get for free
  • Host a parent or kid party - and get your friends to co-host with you!
  • Set up a behind-the-scenes experience somewhere you work or at an organization you support
  • Use your cooking skills and host a dinner party for 4 people or more
  • Share your hobby or passion by taking a group sailing, geo-caching, mountain biking or on any adventure you especially enjoy
  • Ask a business you frequent to give a gift certificate.  If they say yes, we can send them a form or give them our online web address.  (Think restaurant, fitness gym or personal trainer, hair or nail salon, retail store, house cleaner, dog sitter....)
  • Teach a skill in which you are an "expert", such as baking, pitching, photography, knitting, soap making and so on . . . .

The opportunities are endless.  And don't forget, it's not what you know but who you know . . . hit up all your friends, family, business associates, neighbors or anyone else you can think of that might have something unique and wonderful to share.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

If you have questions or want to talk over an idea, contact Auction Solicitation Chair

Pamela Stang at auctiondonations@llef.org or (650) 996-6991.
