LA ENTRADA SCIENCE FAIR - JANUARY 18th-20th, 2012
The science fair can be a lot of fun. Any student or team of students from La Entrada can enter, and depending on your science teacher, there can be extra credit. Winners then go on to the San Mateo science fair, and can continue to compete up to the national level.
It's not too late to enter! Though the fair is January18th, there is still time to do something exciting and put together a poster for the show.
To learn more, to go www.laentradasciencefair.org. If you have any questions, please email Diana Sunshine, Bardia Pezeshki, PJ Utz or John Bargar. |

CURRICULUM REVIEW PROCESS
It's no accident that students in our district are so successful in high school and college. Besides the influence of some great instructors, our students are the beneficiaries of comprehensive curriculum reviews that enable them to experience depth of understanding in essential content areas. The Las Lomitas Governing Board requires us to conduct a curriculum review for all the subjects we teach. (Details can be found by accessing Administrative Regulation 6141.1 on the district website.) The Board wants to make sure that our "Scope and Sequence" for each subject area is aligned with the State Standards and additionally, that our students excel in all subject areas.
Reviewing and reflecting on what and how we teach students is essential to maintain the excellent quality of our programs. The curriculum review process is a year-long analysis of our existing practices and materials, with a view to the future and next steps to be taken. The review team's guiding questions are: "How are our students doing?" "What are the strengths of the current program?" "How can we improve the program?" and "What support and materials will we need to move forward?"
Here is a brief overview of the process:
- Review committee is formed, with one teacher representative for each grade level (K-8) and one administrator who oversees and facilitates.
- Review of current state framework and our curriculum.
- Analysis of teachers' instructional approaches and activities, including surveys and observations.
- Study of current research in the field
- Analysis of assessment data (how are our kids demonstrating their learning in relation to other students)
- Examination of textbook and supplementary materials (does the material benefit all students and is there scaffolding for those with special needs)
- Final written report to the Board, with recommendations for "next steps."
This year there are two curriculum reviews: World Languages and History-Social Science. We are midway through the steps outlined above, and so far, we're pleased with what we are learning about both departments. If you have any input regarding curriculum for World Languages and/or History-Social Science, please send comments to Wally Powell at wpowell@llesd.org and she will make sure your voices are heard at the next departmental meetings.

The 2012 SPRING AUCTION is just around the corner on Saturday May 19 and
WE NEED YOU to help make it the best event ever!!
Help us create a fantastic auction portfolio by soliciting or donating wonderful items, events or experiences to the live, silent and online auctions.
All item donations are tax deductible.
Donating an item is easy and can be done via our online donation form at our website. Click on www.llef.org to donate now.
Need some ideas to help kick start the brainstorming? Here are a few:
- Tickets from your season subscription: sports, concerts, theater, etc.
- A week or weekend at your cabin, condo or vacation home
- Sponsor a one-of-a-kind event or getaway that we can't get for free
- Host a parent or kid party - and get your friends to co-host with you!
- Set up a behind-the-scenes experience somewhere you work or at an organization you support
- Use your cooking skills and host a dinner party for 4 people or more
- Share your hobby or passion by taking a group sailing, geo-caching, mountain biking or on any adventure you especially enjoy
- Ask a business you frequent to give a gift certificate. If they say yes, we can send them a form or give them our online web address. (Think restaurant, fitness gym or personal trainer, hair or nail salon, retail store, house cleaner, dog sitter....)
- Teach a skill in which you are an "expert", such as baking, pitching, photography, knitting, soap making and so on . . . .
The opportunities are endless. And don't forget, it's not what you know but who you know . . . hit up all your friends, family, business associates, neighbors or anyone else you can think of that might have something unique and wonderful to share.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!
If you have questions or want to talk over an idea, contact Auction Solicitation Chair
Pamela Stang at auctiondonations@llef.org or (650) 996-6991.
