From the Assistant Principal
Welcome Back to School - it is so good to see so many returning families, as well as our new La Entrada "Leopards"!
This new school year brings yet another new staff member on campus, someone your children have already met out at the lunch tables and ball cart, Mr. Christopher Nichols, our new Yard Duty Supervisor.  If you happen to be on campus, please feel free to introduce yourself to Mr. Nichols. In addition to supervising our students here at La Entrada, Mr. Nichols is attending college and plans to become a history teacher.

Reminders for Parents:
  • Forgotten lunches/instruments/homework can be dropped off in the front office.  Students are to check the office for their forgotten items, which will be stored on the shelf next to our communication boxes.
  • Our Homework Policy, located on our website, clarifies the procedure for requesting homework when your child is sick.  Below is a copy of the script, for your convenience.
  • Access to classrooms:  It is our policy to not have custodians unlock classrooms for any reason.  If your child has forgotten something in a classroom, they will need to wait until the next day to retrieve their item.
  • PAW ( Positive Actions Win) Club Update: PAW Club is currently under construction.  The PAW Staff Members are working on creating a comprehensive Character Education Program to be implemented school wide.  Last year's PAW Club elected the follow Core Values to be our focus for La Entrada 2011-2012:  Teamwork, Respect, Integrity and Gratitude. We encourage parents to discuss these important values with their child at home.   Stay tuned for further updates as our construction progresses.  Students will be updated about PAW via our local KPAW public announcements.
  • Traffic Plan: Our new traffic plan is functioning well on Altschul Ave.  Many parents are utilizing the new Drop Off/Pick Up curb.  Parents exiting our campus parking lot after school dismissal need to remember that they may only turn right onto Sharon Road.  Thank you for giving yourselves some extra time in the mornings and afternoons to navigate Sharon Road traffic safely.
  • Update on our playground structure:  Now that Las Lomitas Elementary has their playground structures in place, steps will be taken to set up our playground structure within the next several weeks.  Students have been wonderfully patient and are enjoying our newly painted blacktop.
  • 8th grade Parents:   Please mark your calendars for our next DC Parent Meeting - Tuesday, 9-27-11 @ 7pm in the MUR. We currently have 51 students signed up for this amazing trip scheduled during Spring Break this year, April 14-20, 2012.   Please register online at:  www.apple-tours.com .  This trip will be available to 100 students so please register if your child is planning to partake.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming La Entrada Family Picnic on September 22, 2011.

homeworkPolicy for Requesting Homework when absent due to illness:
When a child is at home sick, we believe that s/he should rest at home and get well so that s/he can return to school as soon as possible. We also recognize that once a child is on the mend (but not quite well enough to return to school), the child may want some work to do at home. If you would like to request work that your child can do while s/he absent due to an illness, here are some effective options:

  • Many teachers provide families with resources such as weekly or monthly assignment sheets or websites that can referred to for homework assignments.
  • Students can call a friend in class to find out what work was assigned.
  • Students can get make-up work from their teachers when they return to school.
To request work from a teacher, call or email Marja Rudge or Marie Stosz by 9AM on the day you wish to pick up the work. (Requests made after 9AM will not be available on the same day.)
  • Phone number: 854-3962o Email: mrudge@llesd.org, mstosz@llesd.org
  • Any work provided by a teacher will be in a box in the office after 3:00PM. If someone other than a parent or sibling is going to pick up the homework, please let Mrs. Rudge or Mrs. Stosz know when the request for homework is made. We feel these procedures will be more efficient for both parents and teachers. (Parents will not have to individually contact teachers, and teachers will get only one request a day from the office instead of many requests scattered throughout the day.)

The highest priority is for the student to return to school healthy and able to participate in class. In order to not overburden a child with make-up work, teachers will only request make-up work that is necessary in order for the student to be able to continue to be successful in class.

21st Century Learning & Strategic Planning Initiatives

This Thursday, September 8th, the District's Strategic Planning Committee ("SPC") will hold its first substantive meeting in the process of developing a new plan for our District.  The SPC will base many of its discussions on the ideas raised in the book The Global Achievement Gap, by Tony Wagner, who writes about "why even our best schools don't teach the new survival skills our children need and what we can do about it." We encourage all parents to read the book too.  It is available at local bookstores, or through Amazon at:  http://www.amazon.com/Global-Achievement-Gap-Survival-Need--/dp/0465002307/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1313514728&sr=1-1.  And please plan to attend the SPC's Parent Forum on September 26th, at 7  pm in Cano Hall. This will provide a chance for parents to come together as a group to share wishes and hopes about the future of our children's education.

To learn more about our the District's Strategic Planning process, you can see the following web page:  http://www.llesd.k12.ca.us/StrategicPlanning.html .

In addition, the Strategic Planning Committee membership includes several District parents:  Todd Alamin, Lori Brockman, Larry Kelmar, Leslie King, Rita Popat, Christy Story, and Diana Sunshine.  Also, Governing Board members Maria Doktorczyk and Ann Jaquith, District parents, are members of the Strategic Planning Committee. You should feel free to contact any of these parent representatives to share your input as the Strategic Planning process moves forward this fall.

Finally, be sure to mark your calendar for the kick-off 21st Century Learning Speaker Series presentation which will take place on Tuesday, September 13th,at 7 pm in Cano Hall. Dr. Ira Lit, Associate Professor, Director of Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) Elementary, will discuss ways that K-8 educators can and are re-imagining teaching and creating the sorts of learning environments that our children need to thrive in the 21st century.

Thank you for your support of our schools.
