La Entrada Lunch Lines Update  from Mrs. Dineen

Parents volunteering in our lunch program might have noticed the yellow "caution tape" lines this week.  I wanted to update everyone so you are all aware of some steps we are taking to help improve the lunch experience for your child.
I had several students share with me some frustrations with the lines at lunch;  cutting in line,  pushing to get to the table, difficulty being heard by the the parent volunteers due to the crowds congregating around the tables, generally a bit stressful.
A couple of students and our Lead Custodian, Mr. Melendez, worked with me to create a temporary plan for lunch lines.  The "attractive" yellow tape lines are the result of our collaboration.
The feedback I've since heard from students is that they are pleased with the new order and a calmer lunch line experience.  Parent volunteers have asked me about the lines so I thought I'd share the story with everyone so you are all informed.  I have orders in for some more attractive and functional line hardware so our yellow tape lines will soon be no more.
If you happen to be on campus around lunch time, feel free to stop by our lunch tables and see for yourself what our student/staff collaboration has created.
Bon Appetit!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST MEETING

There will be a mandatory "Beauty and the Beast" parent meeting on Thursday, March 3rd at 6:30 - 7:30.  This meeting will be an information meeting about the play and an opportunity for parents to sign up for various committees that support the play.  The meeting will be held in the MUR.

AIRBANDS

The Airbands is a great way in which your student can participate in a fun and creative way. What is Airbands? Airbands are lip-syncing and dancing along with your favorite song... similar to the TV sensation "Glee," but with a fake microphone. All students are encouraged to try out during lunch in room 24 on Monday, Feb. 14th, Tuesday, Feb. 15th and Wednesday, Feb. 16th. All acts need to present only the first 20-30 seconds of their performance. The top 13-15 acts will then be selected to perform in an evening performance on Thursday, March 31st @ 6:30 PM in Jensen Hall.

News from Kathy Ruwe, Las Lomitas School Counselor

La Entrada Parents!  Please join us for a timely and important workshop being offered at Las Lomitas titled The Importance of Play in Healthy Child Development on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 10:30-12:00 in Cano Hall.

We are fortunate to be able to once again invite Jim Lobdell, district dad and co-founder of the Stanford-based Challenge Success program back to Las Lomitas.  If you have heard him speak before, you know what an outstanding speaker he is.  Join us for the brand new thought-provoking, interactive workshop that will help you better understand:

  • The immediate and long term benefits of play
  • The barriers that make it difficult today for kids to "just play"
  • Practical ways to allow kids more time for unstructured play

Click here for a flyer with more details.  This workshop is for adults only.  Please feel free to bring a friend.

STAR WRITING TESTS for 4th and 7th graders - March 1, 2011  The annual California Standardized Testing and Reporting Writing Test, also known as the STAR Writing Test, will be given to all 4th and 7th graders on March 1, 2011.  The make-up day will be Wednesday, March 2, 2011.

We are asking that parents please make every effort to have your 4th and 7th grader here in school for the March 1st test date and to not pull them from school early for appointments.
The scores from this writing component are combined with the students' scores on the multiple-choice component of the test to produce the final English Language Arts ( ELA) test scores published in August 2011.

Last year only 7th graders were tested by the state in writing.  In years past, California did test both 4th and 7th graders.  This year California has decided to again include all 4th graders in this standardized testing test.  There is no better way for students to prepare for this test than to complete all writing assignments in their regular classes and be mindful of their writing conventions.  Good luck to all our 4th and 7th grade writers!

MENLO ATHERTON ORCHESTRA
Calling all eighth grade musicians! Music is in the Air! It's already time to start thinking about high school and making beautiful music next year as a member of the brand new Menlo Atherton High School Orchestra. In addition to the historically vibrant MA Band and Jazz Band, an MA Orchestra is being added in the fall. The MA Orchestra invites violin, viola, cello and bass players to apply (wind players are also welcome).
The Menlo Atherton Orchestra will meet four days a week (three 50 minute class periods and one long block period). The orchestra will perform 4-5 concerts per year as well as attending CMEA events and may also travel to a music festival. Inter- ested musicians should have at least one year of playing experience and preferably two. Anyone who doesn't have two years of playing experience in a school group or community youth orchestra should plan to audition for the Menlo Atherton band director, Kent Kurrus.
The school requires a minimum of 25 current or incoming students to express their interest in becoming orchestra members in order for the program to go forward in the fall. Please contact Mr. Kurrus to express your interest by e-mail at kkurrus@seq.org or by phone by calling Mr. Kurrus at 650-322-5311. Your response is required to make this program live in the fall. Thank you and welcome to the world of MA music!
