School News

News from Kathy Ruwe, Las Lomitas School Counselor

La Entrada Parents!  Please join us for a timely and important workshop being offered at Las Lomitas titled The Importance of Play in Healthy Child Development on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 10:30-12:00 in Cano Hall.

We are fortunate to be able to once again invite Jim Lobdell, district dad and co-founder of the Stanford-based Challenge Success program back to Las Lomitas.  If you have heard him speak before, you know what an outstanding speaker he is.  Join us for the brand new thought-provoking, interactive workshop that will help you better understand:

  • The immediate and long term benefits of play
  • The barriers that make it difficult today for kids to "just play"
  • Practical ways to allow kids more time for unstructured play

Click here for a flyer with more details.  This workshop is for adults only.  Please feel free to bring a friend.

LIBRARY NEWS

It's award's time.  The end of the year's 'lists of favorites' have been culled and now the powers that be are picking their favorite movie, show, and yes, books from 2010.  While we librarians do not have red carpets or Versace gowns, we do have our Newbery, Caldicott and Seuss Award Winners to send us into rhapsodic literary discussions:

Newbery Winner: Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool
Caldicott Winner:  A Sick Day for Amos McGee illustrated by Erin Stead and written by Philip Stead.
Seuss Winner:   Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee, illustrated by Tony Fucile
We have these books and yes, we do have opinions about these winners--and we're ever so glad to share our thoughts!

Also, here at the La Entrada library we are participating in the California state award program that has the "real judges" choosing the "Best Book".  The program is called The California Young Reader Medal Program and the only people allowed to vote for these books are California children.  There are five categories for voting and this year's selection is once again diverse and very entertaining: there's two books about the 1970s: the Vietnam War and The Voyager 1 Mission are featured. There's a few fantasy selections that include magic and  adventure and in the Young Adult Category there's a combination of slightly darker fantasy and science fiction.

Thanks, again and again for your donations and support of our book fair.  With this money we have copies of all these books and they are on display here in the library.  Come by and see them.  Read the picture books or better yet ask your students if they've read the books and ask which ones they hope will win.  Check back in with us in May.  The winners will be announced with great joy.  Heck, if need be, fancy gowns and red carpets will be found!

All the Best,

Grandparents Day is coming up!

Now's your chance to address and mail the invitation that came home last week in your 4th -8th grader's backpack (take a peek - it's in there!) to your grandparents.  We've even left the envelope unsealed in case you'd like to enclose a personal note.   Just be sure to remind Grandma and Grandpa to RSVP before February 25 by visiting llef.org and clicking on "grandparents".   Any questions?  Email us at GPDay@llef.org.
