Campus Climate Talks Many parents may have already heard from their 4th or 5th grader that Mrs. Dineen and Mrs. McDonough were in their class for a Campus Climate Talk. Our school counselor and I visited all the 4th and 5th grade classrooms this past week and reviewed our La Entrada Handbook, located in the the back of our Las Lomitas Directory, as well as online. In addition to the handbook items, we spent time talking about behaviors that excluded students or hurt feelings. When the topic of spreading rumors or bullying behavior came up, many good suggestions of how to stop gossip or be an ally came from the students themselves. Parents would have been proud of the student suggestions which included," I don't want to talk about someone else" or "That's not a nice thing to say" to "Let's invite that kid to eat lunch with us". Below is an example of our agenda and topics discussed. 1. Review LE Handbook - pp 113-119 2. Bus Behavior - page 118 3. Exclusion Behavior: Mean Friends, Birthday Etiquette, how students can be an ally 4. Peaceful Playground Rules - review 5. Communication Boxes: Room 7's Blue Box for a counselor appointment, Leopard Box located in the library for a bully report 6. Bully/Harassment/Cyber Bullying - pp. 113-114; definition and how students can report and seek help, inappropriate use of "gay" 7. Tattling 8. Question and Answer time The focus of our discussion was understanding the school rules and how a student can seek out help, if needed, or be an ally to another student while on campus. These are important subjects that warrant multiple discussions throughout the year. I did share with the students that I am the happiest Middle School Assistant Principal in California primarily because the La Entrada families and staff do such a terrific job in raising and educating the students that I don't have many office referrals come across my desk. For this I am thankful. Mrs. McDonough and I will be holding Campus Climate Talks with the 8th graders on Wednesday and the 7th graders on Friday during PE class. Please take a moment to check in with your son or daughter and ask them about our discussions.

Kepler's Book Fair
This year's Book Fair was a huge success! The school has earned over $2700 in Kepler's store credit. Kudos to Lori Brockman, Liesl Noble, Linda Waissar, Maureen Goode, and Eva Bryer for the many hours they have spent over the last few weeks helping to organize and then pulling off this big event. Many thanks also to the many volunteers (too many to name) for covering all of the shifts despite only ½ days at school for the kids. We should also sing the praises of our wonderful librarian, Doe Myers, who has provided wonderful support and guidance for this event.
