HOLIDAY FAIRE PREP DAY
Tuesday, November 16th
DATE CHANGED: Please note that our last prep day for the Holiday Faire will be Tuesday, November 16th (originally November 17th). We will be in the MUR.
HOLIDAY FAIRE
The Holiday Faire, one of the PTA's highlight events of the year, is coming on Tuesday December 7th!
At the Holiday Faire we will have 8 exciting gift-making projects for the children to participate in. There will also be a special 8th grade project this year in addition to the holiday cards to our country's military personnel. Larry and Sonya have devised a great schedule so that all children at each grade level will participate at the same time. Samples of all the projects will be on display in the PTA bulletin board after the Thanksgiving break.
Volunteers: Please visit the Jooners website to sign up to help. It is a great day to experience La Entrada spirit, have fun with other parents and see the kids in action!

WASHINGTON DC TRIP FUNDRAISING NEWS
The See's Candy Washington DC Trip Fundraiser order deadline is today, Monday November 15th. Please return the order form to the school office. Orders will be available to pick up and distribute to customers on Dec. 6th at La Entrada.
PENNY WEEK (NOV. 15-19)
This year, members of the Student Council/ASB have decided to focus their fundraiser on a local scale. The annual "Penny Week" profits will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, which provides accommodations and compassionate support for families with children with life-threatening illness. How can your student can help this worthy cause? Throughout this week during lunch, there will be five large water jugs, one labeled for each grade level. Students will put all his/ her pennies into their own grade level jug, thus adding to the grade level. They will also want to put all silver coins into the other four grade level jugs, thus taking points away from their totals. A Penny= (+ 1 point) A Nickel= (- 5 points) A Dime= (-10 points) A Quarter = (-25 points) The grade level who has the most positive number will earn the most spirit points. Remember that our end goal is to raise as much money as we to. Thank you in advance for helping us reach our goal. If you have any questions or concerns, please see Mrs. Rianda or email her at trianda@llesd.org
RECYCLE FOR KIDS
Just a reminder to all parents, that La Entrada does collect old ink cartridges, large and small, cell phones also. They get shipped off to Recycle for Kids and we do receive some reimbursement. Kids can bring them into the Computer lab Room 8, (wrapped in a baggie or paper) or the drop off box will be outside the lab during conference week.
FROM THE WORLD LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Foreign language instruction becomes part of the La Entrada curriculum in 6th grade. Typically, half of our students choose Spanish; the rest divide themselves between Latin and French.Sixth graders are nearly always enrolled in their first choice of foreign language. In 7th and 8th grades, language becomes an elective. When students complete all three years of the language, which are called "1a," "1b," and "1c," it is the equivalent of the first year high school curriculum, and they are then qualified to enter the second year of that language when they enter 9th grade.
Key objectives in world language acquisition include expanding students' interest in other cultures and deepening their understanding of language in general. Learning Latin-based vocabulary, which is, of course, integral to both the Spanish and French curricula, complements academic English vocabulary. Moreover, the grammar concepts covered in world languages assist students to understand and improve their English writing. There are 71 students enrolled in French this year: 23 6th graders, 31 7th graders, and 17 8th graders. In French 1a, students learn basic vocabulary; greetings; how to express likes, dislikes, and preferences; how to describe friends and family members; how to talk about school schedules and tell time; and how to make purchases. Projects include constructing a family tree, labeled in French, and setting up shopping stores in class to buy and sell school supplies. French 1b expands students' ability to talk about their after school activities and spending time with friends. They learn food vocabulary and how to order in restaurants. The shopping unit expands to clothing and sporting goods, including how to express opinions and choose or reject items. In the travel unit, each student creates a scrapbook of an imaginary trip to France. In groups, they plan restaurants, create menus, bring food to class and visit each other's restaurants where they sit down, order, eat, and pay for their meal. The students in French 1c focus first on home and household chores, where they create a model of a house and perform skits about family life. Next they learn how to navigate a French-speaking city, run errands, and use public transportation. The final unit expands their knowledge of issues involving travel, including how to ask for and give directions, make reservations, and purchase tickets.
One more note on learning grammar by studying a world language: most nouns that we consider genderless in English are either masculine or feminine in Latin and in the Romance languages-in fact, Spanish and French have no neuter nouns at all. "Open your book. He is on your desk." And "Let's clean up the classroom. She is a mess!" How weird is that?
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 8TH GRADERS WHO LIVE IN ATHERTON OR WOODSIDE
Many years ago, the Sequoia Union High School District adopted a policy that allows students who live in the Woodside High School attendance zone to attend Menlo-Atherton High School along with all the other La Entrada students who matriculate to M-A. Over the years, the process for notifying the La Entrada students who live in the Woodside H.S. attendance zone of this opportunity and having them apply for M-A has varied a little bit, and this year the Sequoia District is making it simpler. This year, LE students who live in Woodside or Atherton need to fill out an "Open Enrollment Transfer" form, which can be obtained at the SUHSD website by clicking here. This form must be submitted to the Sequoia District Office no later than January 21, 2010. It's as simple as that. No lottery, no mystery. Even if M-A is declared "full," at a future date, LE students who have followed this process will be admitted to Menlo-Atherton High school for 2011-12 under existing Board Policies.

This year's Annual Giving Campaign has received a huge boost with the incredible $330,000 Challenge Grant, and our district families are responding. But we still have a very long way to go! Most families have not yet made their gift. Please take the time to make your donation today, as the Challenge Grant expires on December 31! Can we count on you to make your gift today? Please click here to donate now.We need to meet our fundraising goals early this year, as the School District makes their hiring and other budget decisions in February. We all feel the negative impact of decreased funding per student this year. The District needs our donations now in order to make positive changes for the next school year. It is only through our combined efforts can we restore the high-quality education we parents desire and our children deserve. Our annual phone appeal will take place on Wednesday, November 17th. The parent volunteers of our Foundation Board will spend their evening calling families that have yet to make a donation. We hope to further educate and encourage you to Meet the Challenge. Every donation counts toward participation. If the suggested $2,000 per student is too big a stretch at this time, please consider the monthly payment option: it is easy to arrange and will show your commitment when it counts most! Remember, only 10 monthly payments of $200 will make a huge difference. Please click here to donate now.Thank you for taking the time to contribute today.Together we can meet the challenge!
