WHY JOIN THE PTA?
The PTA, through your membership, supports a variety of programs at La Entrada that supplement and enhance the experience of parents, teachers, and, most of all, students at La Entrada. Our PTA dues support the directory, lunchtime enrichment, and the spelling bee, as well as a host of other programs service sand activities. This year, there are three ways to join the PTA:
- Go directly to our online membership form http://www.laentradapta.org/membership.html and pay using paypal. Easy and immediate, this way helps meet our goal to reduce paper use.
- Download and print the PTA form and return it and your dues to the school office, or mail the form to the address on the form.
- Hard copies of the membership form are available at the La Entrada office in the PTA box. Return the form and your dues to the school office, or mail to the address on the form.

THE BUS STOP
Over the past two weeks the transportation team has enjoyed having students back on the bus, catching up on what everyone has been doing over the summer, and meeting new students. We have also been confirming that the published bus schedules meet the needs of our students and families this year. As students move from LL to LE, graduate, or leave the district, and others join our community, we find that each year is slightly different. We confirm the schedules and adjust them, as needed, each year at this time.
Following are the changes that we will be making at La Entrada, effective immediately:
Morning Pick-up Jose will not be coming down Polhemus Avenue, as traffic makes it difficult for him to turn left onto Alameda and arrive at school on-time. Students at Stop 84 should walk to Stop 74 for pick-up in the morning. Students at Stop 85 should catch the bus at Stop 23 in the mornings.
We are adding one additional stop, Stop 88, on Polhemus at Euclid. Putting a stop at this location allows the bus driver to assist students who need to cross over on Polhemus to arrive home more safely. This stop is added to all routes servicing this area, except for the morning pick-up.
Bus drivers will be distributing new schedules, reflecting these changes, to all students affected by this change. Additional copies of these new schedules will be in the school office, as well. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please call me directly. Joyce Massaro, 854-6311 x30
MAGAZINE SALE
The La Entrada Student Council is sponsoring a school-wide "Magazine Sale" which will occur from September 7th through October 5th. To begin the drive, there will be two motivational assemblies with important information including the La Entrada guidelines for selling magazines and CD's. When selling or renewing magazines, students will be asked to contact only people they know. Examples may be relatives, a family's pediatrician, dentist, or co-workers. We invite parents of La Entrada students to attend one of our assemblies on Tuesday, September 7th, either at 10:00 for grades six, seven and eight or 11:00 for grades four and five. This is the one and only fundraiser our student body sponsors during the school year. Proceeds make many student centered activities possible. These include: assemblies, dances, fourth through sixth grade socials, spirit competitions, noontime activities, intramurals, Olympics, Inflatable Day, Raging Waters, graduation, and more. We thank you in advance for your support. In the past some families have chosen to help the fundraising through private donations. We definitely appreciate and understand this. We would like you to know that if you choose this option, your student will be able to participate in the rubber duck distributions and school-wide magazine activities. Another option you may want to consider is donating magazines and/or CD's to your teacher's classroom, the library, other staff members, or a charity of your choice such as a retirement home or a children's hospital. Participating in this way will also allow your student to earn many or all of the other incentives offered. We look forward to working with you and ask that you review the magazine packet when it comes home on September 7th. Should you have any questions, please contact Tanya Rianda at trianda@llesd.org or 650-854-3962 ext. 124. Gratefully, Will R. , Student Body President Tanya Rianda, Student Activities Director Larry Thomas, Principal
FROM ERIKA LOWE, LA ENTRADA COUNSELOR The third week of school has already arrived and we are all getting back into the swing of things. Here are a few tips that may help your child get organized, manage their time and have a happy successful school year! Set Up a Home Study Center Find a place that is free of distractions (no phone, no computers, no tv, no video games etc.) Have all of their supplies handy in your personal study center. You can store pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, paper, paper clips rulers, calculator and anything else you need in a bag a or shoebox. It may also be appropriate for your student to have a home filing system, where they can store any work or reference material they may use later in class. I suggest a hanging folder system where they can drop in the materials they would like to save. This will help to prevent overflowing backpacks and help them to get in the routine of going through their binders to get rid of materials that are not currently needed. Help your child get into the habit of organizing their backpack each day to help avoid "the missing homework in the bottom of the backpack". Make sure that all loose papers find a "home". When organizing their backpacks have them ask themselves: can this be recycled, can I store this in my home filing system, does need to be hole punched and filed in my binder. Each night they should check their backpack to make sure they have everything they will need for school the next day. An easy way to do this is to use their planner, and check off that they have each of their homework assignments in a place where they will find them the next day. A homework folder can work for this, or the front pocket of that subjects binder. Creating a daily schedule Some students have very busy schedules and can get overwhelmed with trying to fit homework into their schedules. Other students may have a hard time getting started and tend to put off their homework until it is time for bed. I like to remind students that the sooner they finish their homework, the sooner they can enjoy free time. If time management becomes an issue, have your child, create a daily schedule for after school. Using 15 minute increments, have them map out how they will spend their evenings. Make sure to include homework breaks, dinner, free time and set a bed time. Before filling in their schedule, they should look at their planner (which they are using...right!?) and decide how long each assignment will take them to complete and in what order they are going to complete their assignments. Next have them, fill in their daily schedule. (It may take a few days for them to be accurate with the actual amount of time it takes them to complete their work.) This should be a rewarding experience because they will earn some much needed free time!
