Aphasiaaphasia
Aphasia was written by Jim Gloster, a Charlotte, NC director, actor and writer. Gloster wanted to capture the story of his friend, actor Carl McIntyre who suffered a massive stroke in 2005 at just 44 years of age. As a result, McIntyre lives with aphasia, an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to process language but does not affect intelligence. Aphasia is a double dose of reality told in narrative form. Carl stars as himself and portrays his life story in a powerful and nuanced performance. Aphasia uses comedy and pathos to raise awareness about aphasia and provide hope and inspiration to anyone working to overcome obstacles in their lives. The film recounts McIntyre's first person experience during the stroke, his recovery and his struggle with his inability to communicate. The film was shot in Charlotte, NC with approximately 100 crew members rotating through the eight day shoot. There are 33 speaking roles and roughly 35 cast extras that were used at different times. Most of them had worked with Carl previously or knew of him, his career and his story. 1st event will start at 6:30 p.m. with reception following and the second event will have the reception prior at 7:30 p.m. with the screening starting at 8:00 p.m. The wine and cheese reception will be with Carl McIntyre and other members of the cast and crew and is included in the ticket price. RSVP is required and tickets are $20. To reserve your space for this limited seating, one-night-only event, you can purchase tickets online through Queens University Continuing Education or send RSVP email to [email protected] or call 704 334-3799.

As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel, Kerouac-style, and was caught up in Reagan-era grassroots politics. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony walkman. Released in England as The Texas Campfire Tapes without Shocked's authority, its success abroad enticed Mercury Records to offer the newcomer a recording contract. Alexander McQueen's Iconic Designs to be Celebrated in Spring 2011 Costume Institute Retrospective

Alexander

Alexander McQueen (British, 1969 - 2010), The Horn of Plenty, Autumn/Winter 2009-2010. Chris Moore/Catwalking.com

NEW YORK, NY.- The spring 2011 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. The exhibition, on view from May 4 through July 31, 2011 (preceded on May 2 by The Costume Institute Gala Benefit), will celebrate the late Mr. McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded our understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity.

"Alexander McQueen's iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion," said Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "This landmark exhibition continues the Museum's tradition of celebrating designers who changed the course of history and culture by creating new possibilities."

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, the Museum's Costume Institute Benefit will take place on Monday, May 2, 2011. The evening's Honorary Chairs are Franois-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek, and the Co-Chairs will be Colin Firth, Stella McCartney, and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. This fundraising event is The Costume Institute's main source of annual funding for exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

"Alexander McQueen was best known for his astonishing and extravagant runway presentations, which were given dramatic scenarios and narrative structures that suggested avant-garde installation and performance art," said Andrew Bolton, Curator of The Costume Institute. "His fashions were an outlet for his emotions, an expression of the deepest, often darkest, aspects of his imagination. He was a true romantic in the Byronic sense of the word -- he channeled the sublime."

The exhibition, in the Metropolitan Museum's second-floor Cantor Galleries, will feature approximately 100 examples of Mr. McQueen's work from his prolific 19- year career. Drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen Archive in London, with some pieces from the Givenchy Archive in Paris as well as private collections, signature designs including the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat will be on view. McQueen's fashions often referenced the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s, but his technical ingenuity always imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at the vanguard.

Galleries will showcase recurring themes and concepts in McQueen's work beginning with "The Savage Mind" which will examine his subversion of traditional tailoring and dressmaking practices through displacement and deconstruction. "Romantic Gothic" will highlight McQueen's narrative approach to fashion and illuminate his engagement with Romantic literary traditions such as death, decay, and darkness. It will also reveal the main characters of his collections, including femme fatales and anti-heroes such as pirates and highwaymen. "Romantic Nationalism" will look at McQueen's fascination with the distant past, while "Romantic Exoticism" will examine his focus on distant places. "Romantic Primitivism" will explore McQueen's engagement with the ideal of the "noble savage."

Five of McQueen's landmark collections that explore his engagement with the Romantic sublime and the dialectics of beauty and horror will be interspersed among the galleries -- Dante (autumn/winter 1996-97), Number 13 (spring/ summer 1999), Voss (spring/summer 2001), Irere (spring/summer 2003), and Plato's Atlantis (spring/summer 2010). "Cabinet of Curiosities" will include various atavistic and fetishized objects often produced with milliner Philip Treacy and jeweler Shaun Leane, longtime collaborators of McQueen's. A separate screening room will display videos of McQueen's renowned runway presentations.

Artery Artist Talkscltartery
Visit the Charlotte Artery's Fall Exhibit November 12 and hear exhibiting artists discuss their work! Ashley Lathe and Sharon Dowell will present on November 12. Paul Keysar and Indrani Nayar-Gall will present on November 19. Each evening will start with a meet and greet with exhibiting artists, followed by the artists talks at 7 p.m. The focus of Ashley Lathe's work is the recognition and celebration of the banal and overlooked in everyday life; bricks, garbage cans, food, warehouses, sidewalks, and other common objects and places which lack their own drama. As works of art, they are acknowledged and given meaning. Sharon Dowell captures the energy of place, the economic boom and downturn, and explores the theme of man vs. nature. She is interested in the documentation of memory and place and strives to find beauty in often overlooked structures and spaces. Paul Keysar's night series pushes out the abstracted shapes that the subtle shifts of light create in the night. Paul's other series, Conquest, portrays man and nature interacting together. In these works, there is beauty amidst disorder and destruction.  Indrani Nayar-Gall's series Through The Looking Glass and Other Stories is a personal narrative of issues related to migration, displacement and acculturation. Many of these are constructions from her personal encounters, memories and readings.

Ed Moses - wic wack
Renowned Los Angeles painter Ed Moses opens a solo exhibition, wic
wack, at Brian Gross Fine Art! While Moses is known for his
innovative, non-objective abstractions, the works on view explore
pattern and figuration through fabric stencils, animal motifs, and
face-like forms. These dynamic, textile-like paintings can be a shock
to those who identify Moses as a purely abstract painter. Large, vivid
compositions feature mysterious offset patterns and silhouettes of paired "talking heads." In works such as Anima Kracker, exotic fauna
such as zebras, tigers, and giraffes overlap and converge, like zoological quilts. Many animals sport their own patterns of stripes and spots, adding another layer of complexity to the designs.

Sam Havadtoy - Beauty is Mystery
The first stage of Havadtoy's work consists of writing an autobiographical text, which he reduces and condenses and then copies onto canvas. He covers it all with a coat of paint and at times glues onto it a layer of lace, also painted. The exhibition presents portraits the artist made inspired by paintings by Alexej von Jawlensky in the collection of the museum. In some of the paintings, the figure's outlines are very clear, whereas in others, Jawlensky's paintings take on a new interpretation by Havadtoy, almost devoid of figurative aspect. The process of work, combining painting and erasing and concealing the image, leads Havadtoy's work towards minimalist, almost abstract painting that seeks to reach a sublime spiritual experience through its intensity.

M for Montreal
For the past decade, Montreal has become the foundation of an alternative music movement catching the attention and respect of critics all over the world. Patrick Watson, Duchess Says, Martha Wainwright, Champion, Malajube, Cœur de Pirate, Pierre Lapointe and Beast, to name a few, have all benefited from the spotlight that this largest French speaking city in North America has quickly acquired. This impressive roster of artists, serves as the perfect example of veterans who all came together over the last five years at a small but internationally respected music industry event: M for Montreal. More than just a-play-on-words, M for Montreal is a festival that presents local artists to an international delegation of influential decision-makers (festival programmers, agents, bookers, journalists, music supervisors), through a series of highly produced showcases in Montreal and around the world. In a world where boundaries have virtually dissolved, it is, now more than ever, an essential part of one's viability to secure success outside our territorial borders. In creating a window to the world for artists emerging from the Montreal and Canadian music scene, M for Montreal's platform - be it the November main event, M on the Quays, the many showcases presented at SXSW, CMJ, The Great Escape, Canadian Music Week or the mini-M concert series - builds bridges between the creators and those who will pass on the good news.

Let Freedom Ring!

By Essence Calebfreedombyal

Can you think of a more powerful word than "freedom?" It's the idea behind the seven letters that makes the notion of "freedom" something that we will fight and die for. Having true independence and comfort in being you is not only to be free, but is the concept behind Alan Lambert's FreedomByAl clothing line. "My inspiration stems from my faith in God and that people can be fashionable without having to over expose themselves" says the 29 year old Brooklyn designer. "You can be fly, bold or sexy without having to do too much because those qualities are already in you. We were created that way."  Lambert understands that there is power in being yourself and an effortless and natural look that compliments your authentic soul.

Since 2008 Lambert has given men and women this "freedom" through intricate designs on t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts and cardigan sweaters.  "Freedom" is conceptualized on a variety of the apparel through bold statements and strict branding,  including two hand prints connected by a chain on one shirt and letters that read "fashion is freedom and style is forever" on another. One of his top selling styles sports the label "Hustle University."  It's the university that everyone goes to and has what Lambert calls a "global" effect.
Despite that we all come from different places, we can all relate to the idea of working hard and chasing our dreams.

As for Lambert's dream, it does not just stop at tees and hoodies.  He plans to branch out into pants and suits to collaborate with his already dynamic line, "a line that goes beyond fashion to cultivate your style" he adds.
Lambert has already begun to shape not just the fashion world, but the culture behind it.

FreedomByAl clothing can be purchased at www.freedombyal.com. And for style and fashion advice, contact Alan Lambert directly at [email protected] .
