Indian Artist Ravender Reddy Featured at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

indian

Ravinder Reddy (Indian, born 1956), Krishnaveni I, 1997. Painted and guilded polyester-resin fiberglass, ca. 75 x 72 x 73 inches. Photo: Katherine Wetzel © Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

RICHMOND, VA.- The new 21st-Century Gallery at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts features a rich diversity of global artists including Julie Mehretu (Ethiopia), Shahzia Sikander (Pakistan), Farhad Moshiri (Iran), Yukinori Yanagi (Japan), William Kentridge (South Africa), Jiha Moon (South Korea), David Schnell (Germany) and Indian artist Ravender Reddy. Reddy is known for his brightly painted sculptures of life-size figures and monumental heads, usually painted bright blue or gold. A current international news photo features a Reddy sculpture in front of the flame-engulfed Central World Department Store in Bangkok.

Reddy's work blends the past with the present and the spiritual with the vernacular. He draws from sacred Indian traditions of temple sculpture and religious mythology, making figures that seem to update the classical gods and goddesses. At the same time, he finds inspiration for his subjects in everyday culture, including female fashion, popular films, and an Indian bazaar aesthetic. Reddy is also inspired by American Pop art, in particular that of Claes Oldenburg and Tom Wesselmann, whose varied interest in monumentality, the female figure, and transforming common objects into heroic forms influenced his own embrace of Indian popular culture and traditions of public art.

VMFA's monumental female head Krishnaveni I belongs to a type of figure Reddy developed during the 1990s. Standing over six feet tall, this startling work commands attention. The swelling volume of her face with its deeply modeled forms and highly stylized features removes her from the realm of the everyday. Enhancing this otherworldly, iconic quality, layers of burnished gold leaf cover every inch of flesh. Various other attributes, however, call attention to her earthly connections. Her brightly painted lips and brows and the flowers in her hair reflect everyday Indian fashion and its sources in Indian and Hollywood film. Moreover, in Reddy's home state of Andhra Pradesh, Krishnaveni is a popular female name, further linking this figure to the everyday world.

According to the artist's website, VMFA has the only large head sculpture. Reddy's work belongs to a number of other major international public collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Fukuoka, Japan; the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia; and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi, India.

portraitNorthern European Art
As Renaissance Art styles of the 15th century spread from Italy to the northern European countries, they adapted and changed to accommodate local artistic preferences and cultural ideals. For example, the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands turned away from religious paintings while portraiture and genre paintings or scenes of everyday life grew in popularity. A focused attention to detail, coupled with a sense of realism in the depiction of subjects, brought about naturalism within Northern European paintings. The art of Flanders (historically an area including and surrounding present-day Belgium) displays a robust materialism and technical achievement with Flemish artists being among the first to use oil paints. Flemish art flourished from the late 15th century through the Baroque period of the 17th century. It witnessed the rise of a number of popular artists whose work was desired well beyond their country's boundaries and thus had a broad influence. In Holland, the 17th century experienced the "Golden Age of Dutch Art," a period that displayed numerous specialized categories of paintings. In addition to portraits and historical scenes, there appeared popular scenes of peasant life, townscapes, pastoral landscapes, still lifes, and maritime paintings among others.

Michael Fitts
FittsMichael Fitts' crisply painted objects breathe new life into salvaged metal and copper pieces. Surface is very important, and of particular interest are the markings, distressed dents and scratches that were produced long before discovering the metal. Collaborating with those past forces, his subjects are drawn from the most generic of popular cultural visuals, with an emphasis on objects that are used once, then discarded and quickly forgotten. Fitts finds most interesting the unexpectedness of elevating the importance of ephemeral objects to the status of art. Fitts is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. He  currently lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia and exhibits internationally. His work is also included in the collection of Fidelity Investments.

lightThe Light Factory Third Juried Annuale
The Light Factory Third Juried Annuale is an amazing collection of talent assembled from across the country. With more than 130 talented photographers, it was challenging to winnow the field down. It was especially difficult when there were only a dozen photographers remaining in the pool. Selecting the final six was even more daunting. In the end, the visitors to this exhibition will be pleased with both the quality and variety. It just so happens that the final artists are evenly divided between traditional media - especially gelatin silver prints - and more cutting edge media in the realm of photography. The variety speaks to that of the field as a whole, a testimony to the vitality of photography in a new age where film and digital media have found themselves in complementary not competing roles. It is thrilling that so many of the half dozen artists selected are North Carolinian's and Southerners; this speaks volumes to the state of photography in the South. Photography here, as elsewhere, has taken its rightful place as a major medium in the fine arts, something that has been far too long in coming.

dopeart of dope. vol 1: coke
God City Artists are at it again. The "Art of Dope" is a series of shows that play off of drug culture, done through artistic expression in order to bring awareness to what's going on in our society, there will also be an art book published to accompany the work and explain the concepts and ideas behind the "Art of Dope". This show is to merely bring awareness and will cover all elements, positive and negative. However, the Art of Dope also has an underlying theme. Not only would the artwork cover drug subject matter, but God City is playing off of the art actually being a drug itself. The actual physical artwork in the show becomes the metaphor for uncontrolled substances and how society tends to deal with it.
