Her songs are the wry and poignant observations of a Tassie girl living in California and Nashville for the past five years. Audrey calls it "Music with the dirt left on". Auld is a memorable and uplifting entertainer. She's a spontaneous comedienne and a writer of humorous, provocative, and soulful songs. slam2Gauntlet Slam
SlamCharlotte is ready to have some fun!!  The Gauntlet Slam is probably, no it is, the most hilarious slam you will see during SlamCharlotte's poetry slam season. The Slam consists of 4 (maybe 5 depending on time) rounds of shear hilarity. This year SlamCharlotte is only announcing 2 of the rounds in advance. The other 2 (maybe 3) will be announced the night of the slam. You will definitely see an anything goes round where all the rules go out the window (except the time) and an improv round where the topics for the poet's poems are suggested on either FB/Twitter/or directly from the audience the night of the show. Do yourself a favor and come witness the madness first hand. There is no telling what the night holds in store for you. End your work week on a high note! This is comedic relief and all for just $10.
When: Friday, May 21, 2010 @ 8:00pm
Where: McGlohon Theater @ Spirit Square

dierotenDie Roten Punkte
Die Roten Punkte (the utterly dysfunctional pairing of German siblings Otto and Astrid Rot) became an instant household name in Europe after topping the charts in Germany and Poland with their 2005 hits I'm In A Band and Best Band in the World. Described as "inspired, brilliantly executed...a lipstick-smeared, tantrum-loving, sonic collision between Plastic Bertrand, Kraftwerk and early Ramones," Die Roten Punkte are unforgettably unique. Their songs are ridiculously infectious and their live show is one of the most irreverent and hilarious gigs you are ever likely to see. If you enjoy the humor of bands like Spinal Tap or Flight of the Conchords, then don't miss the East Coast debut of Die Roten Punkte!

SOTAC Salutes:
Lena Horne

lena

NEW YORK (AFP) - Legendary US jazz singer and actress Lena Horne, who broke down barriers for black performers in the 1940s and later dedicated herself to the civil rights movement, has died at the age of 92. A spokesperson at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where Horne was being treated, said she died on Sunday, without giving a cause of death.

US President Barack Obama eulogized the singer on Monday as "one of our nation's most cherished entertainers."

"Over the years, she warmed the hearts of countless Americans with her beautiful voice and dramatic performances on screen," said Obama, who also praised Horne as a champion of equal treatment for blacks, especially other blacks actors, singers and musicians.

"In 1940, she became the first African American performer to tour with an all white band," the president said in his statement.

"And while entertaining soldiers during World War II, she refused to perform for segregated audiences -- a principled struggle she continued well after the troops returned home," Obama said.

Horne rose to fame in the mid 1940s, with musicals that included "Thousands Cheer" (1943), "Broadway Rhythm" (1944), "Two Girls and a Sailor" (1944), "Ziegfeld Follies" (1946), and "Words and Music" (1948).
A sultry beauty with a silky voice, her performance in several Hollywood movies however was filmed in ways so that editors could cut her out when the movie was shown in the racially segregated southern United States.

In the 1960s, Horne put her career on hold to commit herself to the civil rights struggle and participated in marches against racial discrimination.
At the peak of her career Horne performed in the top US night clubs and cabarets, singing and appearing in shows with other prominent performers such as Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

Horne announced her retirement in 1980, but the following year backtracked and returned to star in an award-winning Broadway musical based on her life, titled "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," which played to capacity for 14 months.

Born Lena Mary Calhoun Horne on June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, Horne's parents divorced when she was three years old. While her mother traveled in search of work Horne was often in the care of her grandmother, an activist in women's rights and civil rights groups.

Horne began her performance career at the age of 16, dancing as a chorus girl at Harlem's famed Cotton Club, where black performers entertained a strictly white audience.

She went on to sing in night clubs, which eventually led to a spot with the all-black Noble Sissle's Society Orchestra. In 1940 she became the first black person to tour with an all white group, the Charlie Barnet band, in which she was the featured singer.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios signed her to a seven-year contract in 1941, something unprecedented among black performers of the time, and soon became one of the best known black performers in the United States.
Her first film for MGM was "Panama Hattie" (1942), where she sings the Cole Porter song "Just One of Those Things."

During World War II Horne entertained US troops, but refused to sing for racially segregated groups -- and in one incident, refused to sing for a group of German prisoners of war sitting in front of black US soldiers, according to a Kennedy Center biography.

In the post-war era Horne was active in the civil rights movement, and as a prominent member of the NAACP black civil rights group often spoke at their rallies.

Vogue magazine once described Horne as "Hollywood's first black beauty, sex symbol, singing star."

Horne however was clear about the unfortunate secret of her success. "I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept," Horne once said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked."

Since her full-time retirement in 2007, Horne lived in an apartment in New York's Upper East Side, where her close friends said she had a passion for chocolate.

Horne is survived by a daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley, according to The New York Times. Her husband died in 1971 and her son died of kidney failure the same year.

portraitNorthern European Art
As Renaissance Art styles of the 15th century spread from Italy to the northern European countries, they adapted and changed to accommodate local artistic preferences and cultural ideals. For example, the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands turned away from religious paintings while portraiture and genre paintings or scenes of everyday life grew in popularity. A focused attention to detail, coupled with a sense of realism in the depiction of subjects, brought about naturalism within Northern European paintings. The art of Flanders (historically an area including and surrounding present-day Belgium) displays a robust materialism and technical achievement with Flemish artists being among the first to use oil paints. Flemish art flourished from the late 15th century through the Baroque period of the 17th century. It witnessed the rise of a number of popular artists whose work was desired well beyond their country's boundaries and thus had a broad influence. In Holland, the 17th century experienced the "Golden Age of Dutch Art," a period that displayed numerous specialized categories of paintings. In addition to portraits and historical scenes, there appeared popular scenes of peasant life, townscapes, pastoral landscapes, still lifes, and maritime paintings among others.

Michael Fitts
FittsMichael Fitts' crisply painted objects breathe new life into salvaged metal and copper pieces. Surface is very important, and of particular interest are the markings, distressed dents and scratches that were produced long before discovering the metal. Collaborating with those past forces, his subjects are drawn from the most generic of popular cultural visuals, with an emphasis on objects that are used once, then discarded and quickly forgotten. Fitts finds most interesting the unexpectedness of elevating the importance of ephemeral objects to the status of art. Fitts is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. He currently lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia and exhibits internationally. His work is also included in the collection of Fidelity Investments.

Photography, one of the most important visual media of our lives, has been surprisingly uncelebrated, particularly in the United States. New York City, home to the world's most influential commercial and fine art photography community, has lacked until now a large-scale event dedicated to photography. In addition to the curated pavilions, the festival offers visitors an extensive range of activities that generate dialogue and buzz among all communities of photo professionals, amateurs, students, and aficionados of art and culture, including: seminars, slide shows, book signings, photographic workshops, live performances and events, and a gallery row. The festival will also be documented online in a regularly updated and engaging online social media environment.
