Otello

otelloBased on Shakespeare's Othello. The dramatic tragedy of one man's path to self-destruction is magnificently set to music in Verdi's masterpiece. As a tempestuous storm batters the island of Cyprus, Otello's ship battles its way into port. Otello proclaims victory over the Turks and the storm, and yearns for his reunion with his beautiful bride, Desdemona. Yet, his triumph is short-lived as he becomes riddled with self-doubt and jealousy. Escalated by innuendos and compromising situations fabricated by the villainous Iago, who is driven by his hatred of Otello, the tragedy crescendos in a heartbreaking conclusion where even love is not strong enough to prevail.

A Message from Culture Initiative

For those of you who haven't heard of us, we represent a local arts advocacy organization called Culture Initiative (CI). CI was started over a year ago to establish a valuable and accessible art community in Charlotte, NC, in order to inspire artists and supply a necessary platform for them to showcase their work. Since our inception we have hosted a wide range of arts & music events around the city, working with over hundred local visual artists.
Our most dynamic event is in the works. It is to be held at the Neighborhood Theatre in NODA on May 15th 2010 with about 60 of the best visual artists we have worked with along with several bands and performing acts.
The event is titled The Extraordinary & the Something Sideshow: a 10-in-1 arts & music showcase extravaganza, will boast 10 exciting exhibits the likes the NODA community has never experienced. We are also very proud to announce that this event is part of the 10 day long Southern Holiday Festival, were several arts organizations in and around the city will be hosting Arts events to celebrate culture in our great city.

live artJohn Geci & Sarah Faulkner Exhibition

RedSky Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of glass sculptures by John Geci and paintings by Sarah Faulkner. Glass artist John Geci, a native of rural Connecticut, graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, in 1994 with a BA in Philosophy. While majoring in Philosophy, he developed an interest and minor concentration in ceramics and glass. His fascination with creating forms influenced him to pursue a career in hand-blown glass. After college, John enrolled in a two-month study at the Penland School in North Carolina, where he studied under some of the great names in glass blowing. Since then he has worked in the Penland area, assisting teachers, helping run the Penland studio, working with local glass artists, and making his own work. Asheville painter Sarah Faulkner strives to capture the important relationship humans have with the natural world. She experiments with different materials in order to reflect the mysterious and atmospheric qualities found in nature. Faulkner works with paraffin wax as a finish coat. This translucent and misty material blends and softens the undercoat colors to give her work depth and light. Opening reception Friday, May 7th 6:00-8:30 pm.
When: Friday, May 7 - Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Remember The Upstairs Lounge
A New Orleans bar is coming to New York but this bar doesn't serve alcohol. The regulars are long gone. The bar is the Upstairs Lounge, a bohemian French Quarter bar that was destroyed decades ago in a mysterious fire whose story has a surprising power.  In 1973, a popular gay bar in the French Quarter burned down with everyone inside, killing 32 people and injuring dozens more. It was the worst fire in New Orleans history. For such a shocking event, it is little known. Police knew it was arson but could never find hard evidence and the main suspect was never charged as most of the witnesses would not speak to the police.  No Longer Empty presents Skylar Fein's installation, Remember the Upstairs Lounge, which walks visitors right through the swinging bar doors. The show throws a stark light on a hidden chapter of history and offers visual riffs on politics and sexuality circa 1973. No Longer Empty (NLE) is a not for profit organization that orchestrates public art exhibitions in vacated storefronts and properties. Conceived as an artistic response to  present economic condition, No Longer Empty's core mission is to revitalize empty spaces and areas around the venues by bringing thoughtful, high-caliber art installations with accompanying programming to the public.
When: April 29 - May 30, 2010, Wed -Thurs. 12pm - 7pm
Where: 447 West 16th Street, New York, NY

Volker Hueller
Timothy Taylor Gallery is delighted to present the first solo exhibition in London by Berlin-based artist Volker Hueller as part of the gallery's The Viewing Room program. Hueller's hand-coloured etchings exploit all the associative power of the etched line: spidery trails mordantly tracing care-worn physiognomies and smoke-filled rooms. The atmospheric remains of a dark European history lurk within the cracks and crevices of these complex drawings, made up of interlocking fragments and planes. Jaundiced, cruel and complacent faces emerge from these jagged forms, drawing on numerous historical references, such as the élan of Beardsley's fin de siècle drawings or Klee's expressive poetics of line. As Ian Bourland writes in Artforum, 'Hueller's process, of acid etching and hand application of faded watercolor and shellac, imparts the pictures with a sense of timelessness and gravity, as if they came from a fully formed Edwardian nightmare.'
When: Now - May 21, 2010
Where: Timothy Taylor Gallery, 15 Carlos Place, London, UK

Taste of the North End

This year, the Taste of the North End will benefit the North End Community Health Center, continuing the tradition of the North End restaurant community supporting North End charities.  The Taste of the North End was founded by Donato and Nancy Frattaroli in 1993 as a benefit for Casa Monte Cassino. The Frattarolis became aware of Casa Monte Cassino when a family from Italy came into their North End restaurant. The family was staying at the CMC while their four daughters received medical attention at Boston's Children's Hospital. Over the next few weeks, as the Frattarolis developed the idea for the Taste of the North End to raise funds to help Casa Monte Cassino provide its services. The Frattarolis, with the support of the North End restaurant community, held the First Annual Taste of the North End in the basement of St. John's School. That first year, guests were able to try dishes from fifteen North End eateries. Today,  the Taste of the North End currently features over fourty five restaurants, bakeries and distributors. Since its inception, the Taste of the North End has raised over $450,000 for Casa Monte Cassino and other local North End charities.
