Evita

evitaUnder the direction of Glenn T. Griffin, Queen City Theatre Company brings a complete reinvention of a grand classic in an intimate setting for you to enjoy Evita as you have never experienced it before! A show you don't want to miss! Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's music, Evita was a smash hit when it first appeared on Broadway in 1979 and gathered seven Tony Awards including one for Best Musical of the Year. Evita, a rock opera, is best known for its compelling score which include such musical genres as Latin, pop, Tango, and jazz as well as the song, Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Eva Peron was a fascinating and compelling woman. She was adored by many of the people in Argentina, but she was also despised and feared by others. In a country and a time where social classes could not cross nor could women hold places of power, Evita rose from an innocent girl who dreams of stardom on the stage and screen to the powerful position of First Lady of Argentina.

The London International Documentary Festival
LIDF is committed to providing the highest quality platform for international documentaries and their directors. It does this by working with globally recognised partners and venues, such as the British Museum, the Barbican Centre, and the Curzon Cinemas. It also provides a year-round programme of screenings and other events.  Not only does the Festival showcase around 90 films each year, it is also dedicated to what it calls 'conversations in film'. That is, panel discussions, masterclasses, screen talks and live events. The films are always both pretext and context for discussion. The concept at the heart of the LIDF is very simple: To start and continue conversations that go beyond the films themselves - and beyond lights up!

perf maskThe Transformed Self: Performance Masks of Mexico

Public performances of epic tales, historical events, and religious narratives are a key part of modern life in Mexico. Dance dramas, presented in city streets and church plazas, embody a community's essential beliefs and common human problems while imparting moral lessons. The performer's mask is a vehicle of transformation that physically and psychologically converts the wearer into the character portrayed by the dancer. In the altered state of being, the performer sheds his/her everyday identity and the social boundaries of human behavior. He/she now operates as an uninhibited intermediary between the community and the message being invoked. The works presented come from the primary, mask-producing regions of Mexico where dance performances commonly accompany religious rituals and civic events. Particularly rich in pageant traditions and a variety of performance masks are the states of Veracruz, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Sonora, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Hidalgo, and Guerrero.

Evgeniya Kovalenko. «20·30·10».Memorial Exhibition
The exhibition title, 20·30·10, is symbolic. Behind its stern laconism, lies a whole life story, of the life lived and the life that could have happened. 10 years ago, Zhenya tragically died. She was only 20. In April 2010, had it not been for the tragic accident, she would have turned 30, and her numerous sketches could have grown into full-scale paintings. The recognition came to Evgeniya Kovalenko after her tragic death. Her legacy of altogether 50 works has been exhibited in Russia and abroad more than once. Some of her works are held in the collection of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. The show at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art will feature previously exhibited works, such as «The Mill of Life», photographs of Zhenya made by talented photographer Alexander Minayev, as well pencil drawings by Zhenya, including «Dance» series, that will be displayed for the first time. These amazing drawings excellently transmit Evgeniya's character and her attitude to life, a life lived lightly and sweepingly fast, following the flow of pencil line in her drawings.
When: April 29 - May 16, 2010
