Noodle is a sweet, melancholy film which shows moments of hope and humor. It provides a fascinating glimpse into everyday Israeli life that foreigners are rarely given. An El Al flight attendant's routine existence is turned upside down when she must care for a Chinese boy who's mother has been deported from Israel. Miri, widowed twice, has seemingly given up on her trust in people. Noodle follows her interactions and eventual bonding with the Chinese boy who is accidentally foisted upon her, forcing her to come out of her shell and risk losing someone again. They go on a journey together that brings meaning back to both of their lives. Winner of multiple Israeli Academy Awards. Threads Of Identity: Contemporary Maya Textiles
Maya peoples of Guatemala and southeastern Mexico are renowned for their time-honored tradition of magnificent attire. Throughout the world, clothing transforms the biological body into a socio-cultural being integrating the person into the community. Among the Maya, dress is an outward expression of cultural pride. Dress also conveys one's place in the world signaling social identity and geographic origin or current community. It also articulates social structure, political affiliation, and religious ideology by way of its decoration which comprises a symbol system of visual codes and the ability to read the message reflecting one's degree of cultural initiation. Elements of traje reach back more than 2,300 years. Today's fashions, as adaptations of imposed, foreign modes to indigenous couture, are testimony to Maya perseverance in spite of hundreds of years of colonization, enslavement, and genocide. Maya clothing styles generally are divided along language boundaries. This exhibition features fashions of the Kaqchikel, Ixil, K'iche', Mam, Tz'utujil, Chuj, Awakatek, Jakaltek and Poqomchi' from Guatemala, and Tzotzil and Tzeltal from Chiapas, Mexico. Friday, April 2nd from 7-9pm will mark the opening reception for Artist Katherine Blackwell's exhibit titled "Emote & Relate". The exhibit will feature Katherine's signature "Melty People" paintings, as well as a new colorful abstract series she has been developing. Katherine spent the majority of her childhood and teenage years in Vermont. Here with her family's encouragement, she discovered her love for art. She made efforts to uncover and investigate the extensive variety of expressive mediums that the world of art offered. After moving to North Carolina at the age of 15, she began to focus on oils. Without formal education, she developed her skills by doing studies of a variety of landscapes. A concentration in portraiture soon followed. She found portraits to be more exciting and challenging, as well as more rewarding once a true likeness was achieved. A consistent and determined focus on faces and the human form laid the seeds for the most recent evolution of her art. "Melty People" is a concentration spawned from years and years of youthful sketches contorting and manipulating the human body.

A Chorus From the Brain Forest
A Chorus from the Brain Forest is inspired by humanity's yearning to stay in tune to the environment. In this series of paintings, Lark & Key co-owner Duy Huynh combines three components that continue to be influential to his thought process: music, memory and Mother Nature. Though our ever-changing world may appear more chaotic by the minute, Huynh hopes to highlight the beautiful and mysterious patterns that are orchestrated to create our rhythmical surroundings. His contemplative acrylic paintings create a mood for the viewer to explore and discover their own interpretations. The exhibition will be on view in our Southend location from April 2nd until May 29th. A 'meet the artist' opening reception will be held Friday, April 2nd from 6-9pm. Magician Michael Case will also be performing at the opening reception. Terry Thirion: Freedom Park, An Urban Treasure
RedSky Gallery is proud to present an exhibit of selected paintings and photographs by Belgian/Charlotte artist Terry Thirion. These works will reveal the beauty and majesty of one of Charlotte's jewels, Freedom Park, as few have experienced it. The show runs through May 6th. In small plein air pastels and large brilliant oils, with detailed realism and abstract expression, on canvas and through the camera's lens, Terry Thirion captures the park's pastoral landscape, resplendent trees, regional wildlife and serene seasonal contrasts. The exhibit will be both a beautiful artistic rendering and a personal tribute to this unique resource in our city. Freedom Park is Charlotte's most photographed locale and yet its grandeur is often overlooked and unexamined in a busy and stress-filled city. With a European sensibility, Terry Thirion has cherished the park's distinct beauty and discrete charms. She has explored, sketched, painted and photographed every corner of the park for more than 10 years and been a civic champion for the preservation and improvement of its hallmark cherry trees and landscape. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday evening April 9th 6:00-8:30 pm.

Contemporary Chinese Artists Lu Chunsheng and Jia Aili: Counterpoints This is the European premiere of Lu Chunsheng's film, The first man who bought a juicer bought it not for drinking juice, which mixes documentary and fantasy to theatrical effect. Lu Chunsheng showed in the Serpentine Gallery's exhibition of Chinese art at Battersea Power Station. The impetus for this film is Orson Welles' fictional account of an alien invasion in The War of the Worlds which was mistaken for a real news item. It illustrates the influence of technology, mass media and the power of fear.Make Believe, at Rivington Place is Jia Aili's first solo exhibition in Europe, with new paintings and a site specific piece for the window overlooking Rivington Street. Living and working in Beijing, Jia Aili narrates private moods rather than public events or modern day China. Here he presents monumental new paintings reflecting on the human condition, and the individual's vulnerability in a rapidly developing world. A muted colour palette and quick brushwork conjure up disorientating emotions. When: Now - May 15, 2010 Where: London, UK More Info: www.iniva.org |
