The Charles White Sketchbook
Charles White (1918-1979), an artist recognized for his extraordinary draftsmanship,
dedicated his life and work to examining the histories and strengths of African-American
culture. This particular group of drawings and watercolors are being exhibited for the first
time. Although primarily studies for larger works, they poignantly demonstrate the artist's
drawing skills as well as his devotion to working on paper. During his long and active
career, White produced etchings, lithographs, drawings, paintings and murals. His works are
included in more than fifty major museum collections, including the Art Institute of
Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern
Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. When: Now - Saturday, April 10, 2010 Where: Jerald Melberg Gallery More Info: www.jeraldmelberg.com
Ellipsis and Parentheses Ellipsis and Parentheses will feature new works by Artist Eric Hurtgen. After studying under such artists Andrei Prychodko & Amanda Bayard, Eric has evolved into a style of his own. His work strongly reflects his background in, and love of, electronic artwork/graphic design, and recently he has begun the incorporation of his own black and white photography into his work. "In silence, meaning is made more full. Language, that system of shapes and corresponding sounds, fails when words abound. When language fails, we look to the landscape and the world of images, to the shadows that shift on the periphery for new representation. There, in the world of shapes and light and shadows, meaning is recharged. And though a shadow cannot escape the object it defines, its presence can serve the object, constantly recreating it in new and wonderful ways as the light changes through time" ~ Eric Hurtgen When: Friday, March 5 - Sunday, March 28, 2010 Where:Green Rice Designs & Studio More Info: www.green-rice.com

Form & Figure: A Spiritual Journey
Ceramic artist Holden McCurry combines both terra-stone and white clays with custom-tinted glazes to create distinctive functional and sculptural forms. The richly colored textural surfaces enhance their creations inspired by human and architectural forms. Ed Byers has
developed an intense interest in figurative sculpture. He uses earthenware clay and strives to make narrative representations with a unique human story - usually a story of peace and hope - helping to connect to others. Dan Walsh - "Days And Nights"Walsh is known for paintings that employ linear geometry while at the same time subverting it with irregularly drawn shapes, inconstant lines and a pervasive wit. Over time, Walsh's formal (yet purposefully casual) vocabulary has tended to concentrate around the repetition of simple strokes forming intricate, visually striking patterns, such as punctuated lines, cross-hatched grids, concentric squares and collapsed diamonds. Despite their layered complexity, Walsh's paintings make no mystery of their process. They are "proposals" presenting various options, or ways in which programmatic ideas are realized. They suggest the shifting balance between the amount of control exerted over an image and the freedom or flexibility to let the image veer off in its own direction. When: Now - March 27, 2010 Where: Paula Cooper Gallery, Chelsea, NY More Info: www.paulacoopergallery.com
Bharti Kher - inevitable undeniable necessary In her art, Kher gives form to the slightly strange and slightly awkward encounters with the daily rituals of life. Her vision makes the banal wondrous and the quotidian unusual, sometimes even disturbing. Her use of found objects, such as mirrors or furniture, is informed by her own position as an artist located between geographic and social milieus. Her way of working is exploratory: surveying, looking, collecting, and transforming. By bringing to attention the overlooked world with its everyday acts, such as applying the bindi in Indian culture, confessing as a ritual or looking at oneself in a mirror, and then re-assessing their meaning, Kher's work repositions the viewer's relationship with the object. When: March 20 - May 15, 2010 Where: Hauser & Wirth London, Piccadilly, UK More Info: http://www.hauserwirth.com/exhibitions/503/bharti-kher-inevitable-undeniable-necessary/view/
