A mix between Cafe Tacuba, Ozomatli, Manu Chao, Santana and Dave Mathews Band, make the music experience a treat to anyone in presence. Family friendly to all ages and groups, their music is funky, rhythmically catchy and vibrant. The instrumentation is powerful, skillful and relieving. Tropic Culture is musically influenced by jazz, Latin, rock and reggae backgrounds. Influential bands range from domestic to international bands. The collections of different cultures, ultimately, collide to form The Tropic Culture Band.

Bluesman John Dee Holeman
jdhThe Charlotte Folk Society is honored to present John Dee Holeman, master bluesman, storyteller, and buckdancer, in concert at our next monthly Gathering. An Orange County native, Holeman received a 1988 NEA Folk Heritage Award, a 1994 North Carolina Folk Heritage Award and still tours at age 80. He possesses an expressive blues voice and incorporates both Piedmont and Texas guitar styles in his guitar playing. The music that John Dee plays is rooted in the distinctive Piedmont blues tradition. String-band music thrived in the Piedmont - performed by both blacks and whites - and the blues arose in the area, probably reflecting an earlier musical tradition than the Mississippi Delta blues, shaped by the sound of the banjo and by still-remembered African plucked instrumental techniques. John Dee has updated the older Durham blues tradition with his own touches of urban blues, jazz, and rhythm-and-blues. The concert begins at 7:30 PM in the Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Avenue, Charlotte. Doors open at 7 PM. Parking is free.
When: Friday, February 12, 2010. Doors open @ 7:00 p.m.

J.D. Salinger: It's the Words That Matter

Boston Globe Editorials

jd

Our celebrity culture is ill-equipped to comprehend a literary figure like J. D. Salinger, who died last Wednesday at 91. A Martian reading the author's obituaries might conclude he was eminent for being a recluse, for not publishing since 1965, for suing anyone who tried to make unauthorized use of his fiction or his letters, and for dabbling in weird beliefs. But as W. H. Auden wrote in his elegy on the death of William Butler Yeats: "You were silly like us; your gift survived it all.''

Salinger's work will last because of his gift and his craftsmanship. "Catcher in the Rye'' is still read not simply because it appears to indulge the youthful narcissism of high school students. Like Huckleberry Finn, Holden Caulfield speaks directly to the reader, telling his story in his own pitch-perfect idiom, creating a pure fictional artifice.

The perfection of that artifice is the reason for readers who never met him to wish a fond farewell to Salinger. He did what serious writers do: he left behind a world apart from this one, confected out of words alone. And his confidants say he also left behind 15 unpublished manuscripts. His gift survives.

live artVibrancy: Anne Cunningham & Deb Karash
RedSky Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of wall sculptures by Anne Cunningham and jewelry by Deb Karash. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday evening February 5th 6:00-8:30 pm. The show runs through March 9th. Since 1990, Anne Cunningham has been on an exciting exploration using metals such as copper, brass, and aluminum to create large and small free-form shapes. "Every day is an experiment" -discovering new ways to add texture and shape the metals, layering with papers, weaving cut strips, applying inks, dyes, chemicals and paints. With no constricting boundaries, her work continues to change and evolve. Cunningham's work is represented in 12 galleries around the Southeast and in Private and Corporate Collections such as S.A.S. Institute, Duke Medical Center, Bank of Birmingham, Carolina Power & Light, Wake Medical Centers and United Health Care, Salt Lake City. Recently, Cunningham's work was voted "Best of North Carolina Artists, First Place in Mixed Media". Jewelry artist Deb Karash draws inspiration from natural textures, fiber, stone and mixed media paintings and sculpture. Her jewelry reflects the mystery and richness of individual lives and personalities. Surface, color and texture are as important as the form itself.

Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage
Sixty years before the embrace of collage techniques by avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century, aristocratic Victorian women were already experimenting with photocollage. The compositions they made with photographs and watercolors are whimsical and fantastical, combining human heads and animal bodies, placing people into imaginary landscapes, and morphing faces into common household objects. Such images, often made for albums, reveal the educated minds as well as the accomplished hands of their makers. With sharp wit and dramatic shifts of scale akin to those Alice experienced in Wonderland, these images stand the rather serious conventions of early photography on their heads. The exhibition features forty-eight works from the 1850s and 1860s, from public and private collections.
