Inside Scoop!

Season's Greetings SOTAC i Community!
To everything there is a season...
What a wonderful journey it has been! Since 2004 SOTAC Magazine has created a trend and movement for all things tastefully artistic and culturally stylish in Charlotte and beyond. We are proud to have been the trail blazers of the underground indie arts and culture circuit in the city, creating a heightened plateau for all forms of artistry. Amongst some of our accomplishments are: - Received globally recognized PICA Award for Graphic Design, Technical Excellence and Print Quality - Annual Signature Soiree Series - Increased partnerships, sponsorship, readership and advertising opportunities - International arts and cultural excursions i.e. Brazil, Italy, Dubai - Ongoing professional development of creative and editorial staff members As a result of new opportunities presented to SOTAC's Leadership Team, we have decided to discontinue one arm of DSB Publishing LLC., SOTAC Magazine, effective December 31, 2009. In making such a decision our Advisory Board sees the merit and the growing interest SOTAC Interactive (SOTAC i), our web-based publishing resource, has generated in the arts and cultural community. They recommend maintaining readership via SOTAC i as our main venue for presenting information from diverse indie art, style and cultural sources, social networks and our bi-weekly newsletter (E-Updates). Additionally, SOTAC i will continue to offer advertising opportunities. Stay connected for further updates in 2010. Merry Christmas SOTAC i Community! Thanks for the journey, the memories and loyal support of SOTAC Magazine.
As 2010 quickly approaches, the final week of 2009 and first week of the new year are still giving us so many ways to continue celebrating this season. Scroll below for the latest happenings in the art, style and culture movement and be sure to get out there and enjoy!

Blue Dogs
The band was formed in Charleston, SC, in 1987 by lead singer/guitarist Bobby Houck and bassist Hank Futch, who had known each other since childhood and played together in college. Drummer Greg Walker came along later, joining the band in 1993. At first, the Blue Dogs were acoustic-oriented and played a lot of bluegrass and country covers. But in the early '90s, they went electric and shifted their focus to roots rock, country-rock, and Southern rock; the artists who have influenced the electric version of the Blue Dogs range from the Wallflowers and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to Little Feat and John Cougar Mellencamp. Did You Know?
University of the Arts Hosts First Group Exhibition of Women's Pop Art
PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg are names synonymous with the Pop Art movement of the 1950s and '60s. Drexler, Webber and Chryssa, however, are far less familiar: they are members of the lost legacy of female Pop artists.
Like their male counterparts, these and many other women artists enjoyed long careers creating Pop Art. And like the work of men in that movement, their work was characterized by themes drawn from popular culture: advertising, comic books and mundane objects. Yet they are not mentioned in the same conversations with their male counterparts. Is this discrepancy because Pop Art by women didn't sell in galleries or because the galleries didn't feature their work because it didn't sell? Was there some sort of artistic "glass ceiling?"
"Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958 - 1968," the first major exhibition of female Pop artists, will be presented at the University of the Arts January 22 - March 15, 2010, taking aim at these questions in an attempt to more accurately reflect the depth of women's contributions to Pop Art.
"Traditionally, Pop Art has been defined and dominated by small group of Anglo-American male artists," said exhibition curator Sid Sachs, who has been developing the exhibition for six years. "This show expands this narrow definition and re-evaluates the critical reception of Pop Art. Many of these artworks have not been shown in four decades."
"Seductive Subversion" features Marisol's "John Wayne" sculpture, commissioned by Life magazine for an issue on movies; "Black Rosy," an eight-foot-tall "Nana" sculpture exploring the role of women, by French sculptor, painter and filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle; Rosalyn Drexler's oil and acrylic works "Chubby Checker," the basis of which was the poster for the movie "Twist around the Clock," and "Home Movies," which is broken in to frames from old gangster movies; the Times Square-inspired "Ampersand," a multi-layered stylized and illuminated neon ampersand in a Plexiglas cube by Chryssa, one of the first artists to utilize neon in her work; and 17-foot-long triptych by Idelle Weber.
Paintings and sculptures by Pauline Boty, Vija Celmins, Dorothy Grebenak, Kay Kurt, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Lozano, Mara McAfee, Barbro Ostlihn, Martha Rosler, Marjorie Strider and Alina Szapocznikow are also featured in the show.
The University has secured loans of artwork from the National Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.) and Neuberger Museum (Purchase, N.Y.) and major private collectors.
The University's director of exhibitions, Sachs has been researching Pop Art, Fluxus and Minimalism for years and a great number of his exhibitions have reflected this, including "Pop Abstractions" at the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts in 1998 and exhibitions of work by Drexler and Robert Crumb at the University's Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery. But it was a 2002 Yvonne Rainer retrospective at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery that sparked his interest in the lack of acknowledged women Pop artists.
"After the Rainer show, I wanted to know what happened to the rest of this generation of women artists," Sachs said. "There was an entire missing entire generation of women artists. This exhibition came out of pure curiosity of what really happened. This is the first exhibition in the world to examine this."
"Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958 - 1968," was organized by the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at the University of the Arts. This project has been funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative, with additional support from the Marketing Innovation Program. A documentary film by Glenn Holsten is being funded by The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative, with additional support from the Marketing Innovation Program. Additional funding for the film is generously provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Quaker Chemical Foundation. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
it will run until 18 January 2010.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art Grand Opening
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art opens to the public January 2, 2010 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon and free admission all day. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is named after the family of Andreas Bechtler, a Charlotte resident and native of Switzerland who assembled and inherited a collection of more than 1,400 artworks created by major figures of 20th-century modernism and donated it to the public trust. The Bechtler collection reflects most of the important art movements and schools from the 20th century with a deep holding of the School of Paris. In many instances, the holdings by a particular artist are across various media (painting, sculpture, drawing, prints and decorative arts). Only a handful of the artworks in the Bechtler collection have been on public view in the United States. Until now, the collection was privately held by the Bechtler family of Switzerland and has since been committed to the city of Charlotte.

Osiris Rain & Joshua Gage:
"American Dream"
In the exhibition "American Dream" artists Joshua Gage and Osiris Rain seek to expose the contradictions and ironies inherent to the nature of our contemporary society. By looking past the day-to-day surface beauty of our lives that we take for granted, and offering a new perspective on the ideas and aspirations commonly known as "the American Dream" Joshua Gage is inspired to transform the common things that define our existence into uncommonly beautiful images. Osiris Rain's works are heavily influenced by his avid love for sociology and travel. His work gracefully blends his classical training with sensitivity towards contemporary life. OPENING RECEPTION AND PUBLIC ARTIST'S TALK: Friday January 8th at 6 pm. EXHIBITION: January 8th - February 7th. (Dialect DOES NOT take any commission on any art sold. All proceeds go to the artists.) Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present Who Shot Rock & Roll is the first major museum exhibition on rock and roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music. From its earliest days, rock and roll was captured in photographs that personalized the musicians, creating a visual identity for the genre. The photographers were handmaidens to the rock-and-roll revolution, and their images communicate the social and cultural transformations that rock has fostered since the 1950s. The exhibition is in six sections: rare and revealing images taken behind the scenes; tender snapshots of young musicians at the beginnings of their careers; exhilarating photographs of live performances that display the energy, passion, style of the band on stage; powerful images of the crowds and fans that are often evocative of historic paintings; portraits revealing the soul and creativity, rather than the surface and celebrity, of the musicians; and conceptual images and album covers highlighting the collaborative efforts between the image makers and the musicians. When: Now-January 31, 2010 Where: Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY More Info: www.brooklynmuseum.org
