metMetric
The Canadian indie rock, Metric makes their Neighborhood Theatre debut while on tour for their new album Fantasies. Metric blends somewhat familiar, new wave synth lines with rythmic, choppy guitar accompaniment. Singer Emily Haines of Broken Social Scene, can croon like a diva from the chill-out tent or she can spike things up with a Blondie-meets-Kathleen Hanna hiccup. If you're looking for snapshots of punk and new wave bliss in easy-to-digest pop capsules, Metric is your band.

In The Blood
onqForget Nathaniel Hawthorne's New England, circa 1850. Forget the Puritans and Scarlet Letters.  This Hester is the 21st century homeless mother of Jabber, Bully, Trouble, Beauty and Baby. She is street-wise and hip to the scene. Her home is the underside of a bridge in Ghetto, Anywhere, USA. Her story is gritty and pitted with racial, gender and social injustice. Not to mention blatant double standards of morality. Lucky for Hester La Negrita, she has an over-sized, brazen sense of humor and a 2000 Pulitizer Prize nominee, African-American playwright, Suzan-Lori Parks, to bring her story to the stage.

Blindsided by Disaster: The 20th Anniversary hugoof Hurricane Hugo
Twenty years ago, people in the Charlotte region woke up to find their communities in complete disarray. Hurricane Hugo caught most people off guard by sweeping unexpectedly through our area, causing massive power outages, destruction, injuries and even death. It was the storm that wasn't supposed to happen. And we weren't ready. In light of the 20th anniversary of Hugo, the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross is partnering with Duke Energy for an exhibit that captures the devastation through photographs donated by the Charlotte Observer, complemented by video. The exhibit has a feature in which visitors can record their own memories of Hurricane Hugo, as well as listen to others' recollections of the storm.

Paintings by William Brian Hibbardhibb
Stoic horses, trees pregnant with leaves, vivid birds; these are the images of William Brian Hibbard that beckon us into a fleeting and savory moment of nostalgia. Living on a ranch in Santa Fe, and now a farm in a bucolic rural setting in North Carolina, Hibbard's imagery is culled from the nature and life that surrounds him.

Juan Logan: Leisure Spacejuan
Juan Logan explores themes of pleasure and power in these vibrant images of landscapes. During the Jim Crow era, African Americans were barred from simple displays of relaxation and leisure on most public and private beaches, except in a service capacity. Leisure Space examines the lines of demarcation and lifestyles provided by bodies of water : separate beaches, separate opportunities, separate lives. Beaches symbolized power and prestige, while rural lakes and rivers served as reminders of the struggles of blacks and the brutal murder of many.

An Unfinished Conversation: Collecting Enrique Martinez Celaya
Drawn from the private collection of filmmaker Martin Brest, this exhibition of 19 enigmatic works by Enrique Martínez Celaya reveals the artist's complex cross-disciplinary approach to art-making while it explores themes such as Memory, Witness, Voyage, Exile, Isolation, Loneliness, and Coming of Age as threaded throughout the artist's body of work. Dated between 2001 and 2007, the works by Martínez Celaya represent in many ways an unfinished conversation. Each of the 19 works - ranging from monumental paintings to delicate watercolors and one bronze - have special meaning to both the artist and the collector, and each elicits a very personal dialogue between artist and viewer.
