MARK '12 Bootcamp
This past June 8-10, CRC partnered with the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), Light Work and Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County to host the MARK '12 Bootcamp.
Now open to all art disciplines, the workshop included participants representing an interesting variety of mediums. Over the course of the weekend at Light Work, participants were led by Felicity Hogan, one of the authors of NYFA's book "The Profitable Artist," and introduced to the business side of art utilizing a blend of formal classes, individualized training, networking and group interaction. Everything from taxes to pricing was covered by a great list of speakers and then contextualized within a panel discussion of artists consisting of Sylvia De Swaan, Ty Marshal and Courtney Rile. CRC has been a partner with NYFA's MARK program since 2010 and is pleased to help offer this information to artists in Central New York. The MARK '12 Bootcamp program will conclude with a follow up July 7 at Golden Colors in New Berlin, NY.
'Arterie' turns Erie Boulevard blue for a couple blocks

by Tim Knauss /
The Post-Standard.
Syracuse, NY - A two-block-long painting titled "arterie" appeared today on Erie Boulevard in downtown Syracuse, the handiwork of a few dozen volunteers who worked Friday night and today to paint the light blue stripes.
Finishing touches will be completed Sunday, said Briana Kohlbrenner, a member of the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force, which spent the past six months planning the installation in cooperation with the nearby Erie Canal Museum. The pattern blends old and new: A bar code if seen from above, at street level it's meant to suggest rippling water on the Erie Canal, which preceded the boulevard, Kohlbrenner said. The design was mapped out by architect Jason Evans based on a committee's concept, she said. Click here to read the full story.

JazzIgnition at Signature Music
On June 26, 2012, Senator John DeFrancisco and CRC executive director Stephen Butler awarded scholarship prizes to four students who competed in JazzIgnition at Signature Music on Sunday, June 3.
JazzIgnition was established this year by Signature Music and presented in partnership with the CRC with funding secured by Senator DeFrancisco. The goal of JazzIgnition is to engage high school jazz vocalists and instrumentalists from Central New York. The competing students went through auditions, rehearsals with professionals and educators from the Syracuse-area jazz community, and then performed for the judges, Joe Riposo and Todd Hobin. Six students were chosen to be finalists. After each performance, the judges offered encouraging feedback to the students and parents.
The scholarship prizes went to vocalist Ashley Gusman from Bishop Ludden (first prize); tenor saxophonist Dunham Hall from Solvay High School, taught by John Spillett (second prize); Nubia Hill from Nottingham High School (third prize); and vocalist Justin Tanksley from Jamesville-Dewitt High School, taught by Ronnie Leigh (fourth prize).
Dick Ford, executive director of Signature Music, says that JazzIgnition will be held twice during next school year.

IDEAS Workshop with Mark Nerenhausen
On June 28, Mark Nerenhausen led a workshop engaging 48 members of the IDEAS Collaborative and arts community at the OnCenter. The workshop was designed to help arts organizations address the issue of regionalism and how to take advantage of the opportunities it presents, and to define the concepts and determine the means to successfully implement the concepts. Topics ranged from bridging the gap between market data and cultural development to collaborative community and audience engagement approaches. Attendees were seated at round tables working on exercises to measure impact. One worksheet asked participants to choose a local arts/culture organization and ask questions such as "Who cares", "Why do they care", "How much do they care?", and "How do we know", all in efforts to get the attendees to understand new ways to measure audience and community impact. As Founder of the Janklow Arts Administration Program at Syracuse University, Mr. Nerenhausen will be utilizing feedback and data from this workshop for his inaugural Arts Administration class this summer. Overall, the workshop led to greater efforts to improve the goals and outcomes of the IDEAS Collaborative for the future audiences and community members of CNY.
