Cuban-born artist Oscar Garces finds the illumination he needs in Syracuse
The light in Oscar Garces' life is painting. Of all places for the artist to create his "Cuadros de Luz" ("Paintings of Light") series, he chose not sun-drenched Miami, his first home after leaving Cuba with his mother, brother and sister, but sun-starved Syracuse.
He is further removed from any penetrating rays of light in the tight spaces of the front room of a small second-floor apartment on the city's North Side, which he uses as his studio. Large canvases, in various stages of completion, on easels and propped on two couches crowd out daylight from two street-facing windows.
Garces puts the spotlight on the recurring themes of most of his paintings.
"I always bring up light," says the lanky Garces while sitting in the bright baby-blue living room, hemmed in with a drawing table, file cabinet, television and laptop atop tables.

SU grad Aaron Sorkin working on first Broadway musical, starring Hugh Jackman as Houdini

Syracuse University graduate Aaron Sorkin won six Emmys for his series "The West Wing" and, in 2010, took home an Oscar for writing the screenplay for "The Social Network." Is he aiming at the Tony Awards next?
Producers announced
Wednesday that Broadway's 2013-14 season will feature a new musical called "Houdini," about the famed illusionist. Sorkin will be making his debut as a librettist, the person who writes words to be set to music in a stage performance.
Three-time Academy Award and four-time Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz of "Wicked" fame will compose the music. "X-Men" star Hugh Jackman, who played a magician previously in "The Prestige," will play the lead role of Harry Houdini. "I have been deeply fascinated by the life of Harry Houdini since I was young, and in many ways I've been preparing for this role my whole life," the 43-year-old actor told Deadline. "I am thrilled to be collaborating with this collection of artists who are all at the top of their game."
Jackman previously appeared on Broadway in the musical "The Boy From Oz" and a Keith Huff play "A Steady Rain" with Daniel Craig. Most recently, he sold out a 10-week run of "Hugh Jackman: Back On Broadway," which earned more than $2 million in the last week alone -- the highest weekly gross ever recorded by the Shubert Organization, which owns the Broadhurst and 16 other Broadway theaters.

Cultural Resources Council Announces $120,000 in Community Arts Grants
The Cultural Resources Council has announced its Community Arts Grants for 2012. Seventy-one not-for-profit organizations and nine regional artists will share $120,000 in awards for community-based cultural projects in Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties.
"This is the largest number of grants ever awarded by the CRC," said Stephen Butler, Executive Director of the CRC. "Our service has expanded from three to six counties, allowing us to support important local projects throughout Central New York-from neighborhood festivals to exhibitions, performances, and educational programs.
"While the locations vary from rural villages to urban centers, all of these projects help sustain the vitality of our communities, and make them attractive places to live or work.
Community Arts Grants are awarded with funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The program is designed to reflect the priorities of communities and neighborhoods across the state by relying on local decision-making.
This year, the CRC carried out the program with the help of five different review panels composed of 35 qualified volunteers from all six counties. The panels reviewed applications for funding that had been solicited during the summer and fall from organizations and individual artists throughout the region.
