Taking public art to the streets of Syracuse's neighborhoods, parks, libraries, school and creek
Towering structures, hard surfaces, angular and familiar forms are reshaping the landscapes across Syracuse's neighborhoods. The Community-Based Public Art Project has integrated art work close to the homes of city residents. By month's end, six sculptures will have been installed in five residential sections and one downtown location. The project "was an effort to get artwork out into the neighborhoods," says Kate Auwaerter, Syracuse public art coordinator. With $25,000 from the city budget, the Syracuse Public Art Commission was able to fund the commission and installation of public art.
The SPAC decided to disperse the funds rather than make an investment in one major art work. Auwaerter says SPAC wanted community involvement "to see if we couldn't get people thinking about public art in their own neighborhoods all in an effort to bring artwork into people's everyday lives."... read the full article by Melinda Johnson on Syracuse.com

Technical Assistance Support
CRC Helps Provide Statewide Technical Assistance Support
The Cultural Resources Council recently announced eight grants totaling over $42,000 to local arts agencies and multi-arts centers across New York. The grants were part of a technical assistance initiative administered by CRC for the State and Local Partnership Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. The grants support the engagement of outside experts in areas such as marketing, communications, computer systems, website development; and cultural planning.
"It was a pleasure to assist NYSCA in delivering this much-needed support," said Steve Butler, CRC Executive Director. "In order to sustain quality programs, arts organizations like these must find the resources to address a wide range of administrative needs."
Following a competitive review process, awards were made to The Arts and Cultural Council of Rochester; Carnegie Art Center; Garrison Arts Council; Genesee Valley Council on the Arts; Hubbard Hall Projects; Huntington Arts Council; Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council; and Springville Center for the Arts.
Applications from a total of twenty-five organizations were reviewed by a panel of experienced arts administrators and consultants: Andrew Marietta, Regional Manager of the New York Council of Nonprofits; Joanne Mongelli, Deputy Director of the Westchester Arts Council; Janet Newcomb, Executive Director of the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes; and Halsey M. North, Chairman of The North Group, Inc.
