CRC's Stephen Butler Discusses Economic Impact of the Arts in This Month's CNY Business Exchange

CNY Business Exchange Cover

"A rich arts and culture industry breeds a strong economic community," reads the title of the article written by
CRC Executive Directory Stephen Butler published in the current August/Sept. issue of CNY Business Exchange.  The article discusses the results of a self-study conducted by the Arts and Culture Leadership Alliance (ACLA) in 2009.

Quick Facts
reported in the article:

* "Onondaga County's arts and cultural organizations have an economic impact of $71 million."

* "The arts and cultural industry directly employs 1,060 people, while its day-to-day business expenditures support more than 1,000 additional jobs, resulting in cumulative household incomes of approximately $39.5 million."

* "According to the study's 2009 estimate through paid attendance, visits to festivals, fairs, free events, live radio and other media performance events in Onondaga County attracted 1,813,852 tourists and local residents, including 160,000 students."

* "...last year's Turner to Cezanne exhibit at the Everson drew more than 60,000 visitors."

NYSCA Cuts All Funds for Advocacy Organization NYS Arts

According to the NYS Arts Facebook page, "On June 30 all funding support to NYS ARTS was cut by NYSCA. Because this grant was zeroed without warning in the middle of our fiscal year, NYS ARTS is in danger of closing our doors."

NYS Arts, The Alliance for New York State Arts Organizations, is a statewide service and advocacy organization responsible for maintaining the NYS Arts Online Advocacy HQ and hosting the annual ArtsDay in Albany.

This news comes on the heals of a significant fight last spring against a proposed 40% state budget cut to the arts proposed by Governor Paterson.

The Owner of the Gear Factory, Rick Destito, was featured in a August 10 New York Times article for his recent renovation work on his home on the Near Westside.  Destito was mentioned as an example of the kind of "young, skilled, motivated" type of people returning slowly to Rust Belt cities such as Syracuse.

This year's On My Own Time art exhibit will run Oct. 16 - Nov. 14 at the Everson Museum of Art.

77 original pieces, created by employees of local businesses, have been chosen this year by a panel of professional local artists.
The exhibit will include paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, wood work, jewelry, metal work, photography, and more.
