Gov. proposes 40% budget cuts for the arts!

On April 27, 2010, Governor David Paterson announced a revised Executive Budget proposal for the 2010-11 fiscal year. This new proposal recommends a 40% cut to NYSCA's Local Assistance (grant making) funding for the 2010-11 fiscal year, and the same amount for the following 2011-12 allocation.
His proposal will slash funding from $41.6 million in 09-10 to $25.2 million, making this the largest state agency cut.
He also proposed a 12% cut to state operations...from $5.29 million to $4.84. We cannot let this proposal go unchallenged!
TELL YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS and the LEADERSHIP in Albany to reject the Governor's proposal. Tell them what your organization will have to do if its NYSCA funding were cut by 40%.
Email them, call them, send a fax, make a YouTube video and send it to them.
Make it personal; Make it poignant; Make it persuasive.
Make it urgent.
The Governor's proposal reduces the state's per capita spending on the arts from $2.48 to 77 CENTS, dropping NY below the national average of 90 cents and putting us at 26th in the nation. All this in a state where the arts have an economic impact of $25.7 BILLION dollars, generates more than 345,000 jobs, in 54,000 arts business.

Michael Harms Theatre Festival
Performance from 2010 Michael Harms Theatre Festival
 | Michael
Harms Theatre Festival happened a week ago on Saturday, April 24th. Junior and
senior high school youth competed in the year's competition.
This
year, the Festival moved its location to partner with Cayuga Community
College. Additionally, Oswego Childrens Theater, Skaneateles High
School, and Auburn High School were all new to the festival. The
Festival performances confirmed
the level of talent that exists in the Central New York area. These
young people were amazing.

Awards:
-Award of Excellence for a School went to Skaneateles High School
for their performance of Pride and Prejudice, Director Michael Kringer.
-Award of Excellence for a community group went to La Joven Guardia
del teatro Latino for their performance (completely in spanish) of The
Adventures of Don Quixote, Director Jose Miguel Hernandez.
-Awards for Technical merit went to Skaneateles High School as well.
Scholarships:
Michael Harms Scholarship $1500 to Gabrielle Gorman of Nottingham High School
Cultural Resources Council Scholarship of $600 to Joseph Townsend of Auburn High School.
Workshops Included in the Festival:
"Movement for Actors," Cheryl Wilkins Mitchell, Choreographer and former Dancer
"Character Development," Walt Shepperd and the Media Unit
"Props Workshop," Virginia Fennesey Interesting Note: Oswego Childrens Theater, a small non-profit fundraised through chicken dinners and drawings to bring their
kids to the event, rented a bus, and got motel rooms for the night.
Their performance of Juvie was challenging subject matter which was
very well directed by Lyndsie Lee Jones, a past participant of
the Festival. She received her degree in theater education and returned
to Oswego, working with her mother Kelly Mosher and area youth to
produce children's theater.
On My Own Time 2010

Annual OMOT community visual arts program.

The program highlights the artistic
talents of employees from a wide range of professions. In-house exhibits
of their original works are scheduled at each participating organization
during May and June. The submitted art, which may include paintings,
sculpture, ceramics, wood work, jewelry, metal work, photography, and
more, will be juried by a panel of local professional artists. As a
program finale, the Everson Museum in Downtown Syracuse will host an
art show featuring selected pieces from the in-house shows.
This collaboration
helps make the arts accessible to the general public and allows the
local artists an opportunity to exhibit their works in a nationally
recognized museum. The show is open to the public, and will run from

Calls for Entry
RFP for Public Art on Southside The Southside TNT Planning Council and the Syracuse Public Art Commission seek to commission a sculpture to be located at the Beauchamp Branch Library within the Southside neighborhood of Syracuse, NY. The total project budget is $6,000 for design, fabrication and installation. The piece will become part of the City of Syracuse's permanent art collection. The Southside TNT Public Art Committee will administer the selection and installation process. Deadline for RFP: Monday, May 17, 2010
Plowshares Craftsfair Applications are now being accepted for the 40th annual Plowshares Craftsfair. The Craftsfair will be held December 4 and 5 at Nottingham High School. Application deadline is May 17
Everson's 60/60 Event The Everson
Members' Council is looking for artists to participate as contributors
in the second annual 60/60 event at the Everson on June 18. Artists are invited to create
or finish an original work of art in 60 minutes, between 5:30 and 6:30
pm. During this time, guests will enjoy an open bar and hors d'oeuvres
while mingling and observing as the artists work. Guests will also have
the chance to purchase raffle tickets to enter to win the art work of
their choice. At 6:30 pm the raffle will be drawn and winners will be
asked to take their prize home with them. The artworks are generously donated by the participating artists. 60 artists will be accepted to participate in order of receipt of their hard copy, completed application form. Visit www.everson.org for more information.
Stone Canoe Art Awards Stone Canoe, a Journal of Arts and Ideas from Upstate New York, will
offer a new set of prizes for its 2011 edition, designed specifically
for Syracuse City School District (SCSD) high school students. Funded
by the Gifford Foundation, the prizes will be awarded in four
categories, conforming to the four primary content areas featured in
the journal: visual arts, fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Students
currently in grades 9, 10 and 11 in the SCSD will be eligible to submit
entries. The prize winners in each category will receive a certificate
and a cash award of $500, and their entries will be published in Stone
Canoe Number 5, scheduled for publication in January 2011. All entries must be sent to the
journal via the website, www.stonecanoejournal.org. Deadline is Sept. 30.
Call
for Photographers Now through Oct. 2010, photographers are
invited to take pictures of The Stone Quarry Hill Art Park and submit
seasonal photos monthly to The Art and Exhibition Committee for
inclusion in the 2011 Art Park Calendar. Every photographer that is
registered will have at least one photo in an exhibition scheduled for
Sun. July 24, 2011 - Aug. 14, 2011 in the Winner Art Gallery located on
the Art Park grounds. Cost to submit: $35 ($25 for members). For more

Cortland Arts and Wine Festival Over 60 artists set up on the lawn throughout the Courthouse Park for the 2009 show. Over $1,000 in prizes will be distributed including $100.00 for Best of Show. Taking place in Cortland, NY on Aug. 7, 2010; deadline June 1, 2010

Workshops/Classes
Leadership Greater Syracuse, CNY's premier community leadership training organization, is seeking applicants for 2011 class. LGS is dedicated to recruiting, equipping, engaging and uniting present and future leaders of all ages, experiences and backgrounds committed to making a difference in their communities.
Each 50-member class represents a cross-section of local business, education, manufacturing, nonprofit and government organizations. The LGS program teaches program participants about community leadership, empowerment, group dynamics, community opportunities and trends, and transforming communities using its assets while solving problems. By years end, class members have forged strong bonds with each other as they approach challenges by using their collective talents and experience. Summerfame - Oswego Summer Theatre Institute A musical theatre experience on Oswego's lakeside campus. The Summerfame experience is a special residential, intensive experience for students entering grades 9 -12 to train in several performance disciplines: acting, vocal music, dance, musical theatre and technical theatre. Takes place July 18 - 30, 2010. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Y Arts Spring II Session Register for classes in pottery, drawing, painting, ballroom dance, jazz and ballet. Classes are available to everyone, from preschoolers through adults. Each session lasts for 6 weeks and all art materials are supplied by the Y Arts Studio. Open to YMCA Members and Non-members. Classes began the week of April 26. P rivate music lessons also available in guitar, drums, violin, voice, piano and wind instruments. All Y Arts classes are taught by professional artists, musicians and dancers. There are also ongoing Stained Glass Classes every Wednesday night from 6-9pm taught by Brennan's staff.
