Donors' gift helps assure stewardship of open space in Tiverton
The stewardship of open space, especially in Tiverton, is a passion for Garry Plunkett. Four years ago, he was instrumental in the creation of the Pocassetlands Stewardship Fund at the Foundation. Last year he and his wife, Virginia, further assured the stewardship of Tiverton's open space with the establishment of a charitable gift annuity (CGA) that will be gifted to the Pocassetlands Stewardship Fund following the Plunketts' deaths.
"It's a great fit for us," Garry says of the CGA. "Once we decided to do something with our assets, the idea of doing it now was very appealing. We're making sure it happens and we have perfect control over it. The tax-free part of it is another benefit, as is the income we receive."
With a CGA, a donor transfers cash or securities to the Foundation and the Foundation pays the named beneficiaries a guaranteed amount for life. At the death of the last beneficiary, assets are used by the Foundation to create or add to an endowed fund, according to the donors' instructions.
Garry explains that the Fund will benefit the only place he has "settled down and established roots" in his adult life. "Early in our marriage, we traveled around the world with my Navy assignments. Then, to turn the page, it's nice to be able to sink some roots." In working with the Foundation, Garry concludes, "I've been very impressed with the quality of the Foundation's investment team and how thorough the Foundation is in researching and selecting causes to support. The Foundation has a hell of a record. It's a very comforting feeling. Everything it does is not only classy, but also substantial and solid."
