Foundation announces 2010 Equity Action grants totaling $44,600
Nine local nonprofit organizations serving the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities have been selected by Equity Action, an initiative of the Rhode Island Foundation, to receive funding for projects and programs this year. Equity Action has awarded 75 grants totaling nearly $500,000 to organizations over the past six years
"The 2010 applicant pool was very competitive. The grant awards will enable nine local nonprofits to initiate or expand LGBTQ-specific programming. We are extremely pleased that since 2004, Equity Action has invested in 75 programs and projects that improve the quality of life for LGBTQ Rhode Islanders," said Anna Cano Morales, associate vice president for grant programs at the Foundation

What is SoCoWiWo?
Judith Anderson and Marcia Blair and Barbara Margolis and Colleen Gregory recently established the SoCoWiWo Fund to support programs and activities in South County. Their gift of $10,000 was matched by the Foundation as part of the challenge grant for Equity Action. Barbara Margolis explained their inspiration for the gift:
"We are deeply grateful for the blessings we have experienced in our lives and one of those blessings is the wonderfully strong and supportive community of women that we are a part of. Our group of friends has engaged in a variety of activities over the past 25 years, and at one time called ourselves SoCoWiWo, as a shortened version of South County Wild Women. We wanted to endow Equity Action with funding that would be specific to South County to provide seed money for other community building activities conducted for the benefit of our LGBTQ community, into perpetuity, as a way of thanking the community that has been so good to us." Via SoCoWiWo, interest earned through the Foundation's investments will be incorporated into Equity Action grantmaking in order to fund educational, artistic or community building programs or initiatives for LGBTQ communities in southern Rhode Island. We applaud Judith, Marcia, Barbara and Colleen for their creative philanthropy!

| Birthday wishes benefit Equity Action
When Sally Ann Hay turned 60 last month, instead of gifts, she asked friends and family to celebrate this milestone occasion by making donations to Equity Action. Her thoughtful gesture raised $2,000 - and
with the match from the Foundation - a total of $4,000 was raised. Many thanks to Sally, her friends and family for a truly special birthday gift! |
