Article1Foundation-commissioned study finds 140,000 Rhode Islanders have no health insurance

"Getting everyone into the (health insurance) pool" was the topic of a recent forum at the Foundation where it was revealed that 140,000 Rhode Islanders - 16% of the population - are without health insurance.

The state's high unemployment rate, as well as a major shift in employment toward industries that are less likely to offer insurance, are contributing factors to this growing problem.

Presenters at the forum, Deborah Chollet of Mathematica Policy Research (which conducted the study and issued the report) and Deborah Faulkner of Faulkner Consulting Services, provided information on health expenditures for uninsured people, the sources of that money, and projected additional costs to cover the uninsured.
