Three RI-based writers to 'further their work' with prestigious MacColl Johnson Fellowships

Three Rhode Island based writers - Pawtucket resident Matthew Derby and Providence residents Marie Myung-Ok Lee and Christine Montross - each have been awarded $25,000 fellowships from the Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund at The Rhode Island Foundation.

The fellowships are intended "to fund an artist's vision or voice." They are awarded on a three-year cycle to composers, writers, and visual artists. In addition to the three fellows, three individuals were named as finalists in recognition of the artistic merit and strong showing of their work.

In order to make the most positive impact with our investments in the community, we have instituted a few exciting changes to our grantmaking practices.

Among the highlights:

  • Rolling application process for strategy grants, with applications accepted throughout the year and a turnaround time of 6-10 weeks.
  • For organizational development grants, an increased maximum grant size of $10,000 and inclusion of an organizational assessment tool.
  • Electronic submission of applications required for all grant programs in 2010
