More than 300 educators and administrators from charter and other public schools from throughout Rhode Island gathered recently for the RI League of Charter Schools-hosted conference, "Inspired Schools Consortium: Connecting Educators, Inspiring Achievement."

Co-sponsored by The Rhode Island Foundation and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, the conference offered attendees more than two dozen workshops on topics ranging from environmental sustainability to virtual education and from art integration to digital portfolios.

Denise Jenkins, grant programs officer at the Foundation with expertise in the education sector, notes, "I firmly believe every school has a best practice. This conference enabled educators to share those best practices, with the goal of providing every Rhode Island student with an equitable, quality education."

ArticleFoundation joins regional, national foundations to support RI 'Race to the Top' grant application

The Rhode Island Foundation, the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, and the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation have joined forces to support the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's application for federal Race to the Top funds.

Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist noted, "If successful, our application could bring to Rhode Island upwards of $100 million to help close achievement gaps and advance learning for all."

Applicants must detail how they would use federal funds to support statewide school reform, specifically to improve teacher effectiveness, turn around the lowest-performing schools, build better data systems, and establish world-class standards and assessments.
