Coalition joins forces to create $1.1 million loan forgiveness pool

James E. PurcellAlong with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), the Rhode Island Medical Society (RIMS) and the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority (RISLA), the Foundation announced today an historic program that will provide loan forgiveness for primary care physicians and other health professionals.

"There is a growing need to attract physicians and other professionals to this practice area," stated Foundation President & CEO Neil Steinberg, adding, "The shortage of these professionals -- who are critical to keeping healthcare costs at a reasonable level - is acutely felt in Rhode Island. Loan forgiveness takes direct aim at the problem."

The Foundation is contributing $600,000 over three years from the Fund for a Healthy Rhode Island, while BCBSRI and RIMS have contributed $500,000 specifically for loan forgiveness for primary care physicians. RISLA will administer the program at no charge.
