Foundation teams with Rhode Island State Council on the Arts to leverage federal stimulus dollars; 18 local arts organizations receive grants
Eighteen arts organizations throughout the state will benefit from an infusion of funds to restore or retain jobs in the arts, it was announced yesterday at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School in East Providence. The Foundation extended the reach of $291,500 awarded by RISCA, contributing an additional $100,000 that will help organizations retain or restore 77 critical positions. Governor Donald Carcieri, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and U.S. Congressmen James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy were on hand to offer remarks and congratulations. Foundation President Neil Steinberg expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with RISCA, noting that leveraging federal dollars was a perfect example of the kind of creative collaboration required in these challenging economic times. The announcement began with a performance by 14-year-old Felipe Ferraras, a Music School student and recipient of the Foundation's Alan Fox Scholarship, who put a human face on the impact of arts funding. As Felipe sounded the final notes of Chopin's Prelude in D Minor Op. 28, the overflow crowd burst into thunderous applause. Read the RISCA press release and see photos from the event. |
