Accountability and Supervision

Supervision is difficult, especially if you are making that jump for the first time. To do the job right, you need to start directing the performance of former peers and friends and then hold them accountable for their behaviors. I know that there are many supervisors who are comfortable with that first part; directing performance. It is the latter, holding them accountable, that is more of a challenge. But it is that act of holding others accountable that separates great supervisors from the pack. I am not suggesting that you get discipline-happy and write people up for every minor violation; that is very likely to be counter-productive in the long run. So how should it be done.... - Have clear expectations for performance, the more detailed the better, especially for less-experienced officers.
- Let them know that you will be inspecting their work to determine if your expectations were met.
- Provide appropriate (positive or corrective) feedback at, or immediately following, the evaluation.
- Repeat consistently.
If you are known as a supervisor who consistently holds officers accountable, the performance of your officers will elevate to meet your expectations. Read on to see how accountability can present itself in a police promotion oral board. |
Accountability as a Chief-Level Question
What changes are you seeking to bring to this agency?
Tip A strong response in this area requires an understanding of the agency's strengths and weaknesses so that an appropriate change is recommended. To make your response even stronger, indicate the challenges involved in implementing change and the importance of accountability in sustaining a change for the long run. |

Accountability as a Lieutenant or Captain-Level Question
As a mid-level manager, you will need to delegate through layers. How would you do that successfully?
Tip Delegation relies on accountability to assure task completion. Each level in your command should be performing their tasks as you desire them to be performed. Tell the panel that you will rely on clear communication to your direct-reports followed by inspections of each level within your command to foster accountability throughout the ranks. |

Accountability as a Sergeant-Level Question
As a new sergeant, how will you establish yourself with your former peers?
Tip This response is best served with a one, two punch. Start with communication, telling the panel that you will meet with each of your direct reports to clarify your expectations with regards to performance and your professional working relationship. Then tell the panel the behaviors that you will engage in to assure individuals know that they are being held accountable for appropriate performance. |

Because our online testing system has over a thousand members and is all computerized, we are able to pick out the 50 - 100 "toughest" questions from your textbooks - those questions that most people get wrong most of the time. |
And, because we are an actual promotional testing company (see www.PolicePromotion.com ) we employ experienced "Subject Matter Experts" in the police promotional testing field. These experts are able to pick out which questions are the most "valid" - those that have the most direct application on the day to day work of a police supervisor or manager. These are the questions MOST OFTEN ASKED on written exams by police promotional testing companies (like us). What you'll have is 50 - 100 (depending on the size of the textbook) of the "toughest" and most "valid" questions, those MOST OFTEN MISSED in promotional testing, that you can print out and practice with, on your own or with a friend or family member, away from the computer, as a way to further ensure that YOU COME OUT ON TOP in your promotional testing. Each question is multiple choice, with the correct answer AND the book page number at the bottom of the card. |
Expensive? No way. Only $12.95 per title, with a 20% discount for 2 or more. All you need to do is just print the Adobe file we will send you on regular paper or heavy card stock and then cut the sheets into quarters.
To order, use this PayPal link, you can use PayPal or any Credit Card. The computer technician on duty will run the current list of the "toughest and most valid" questions from the book(s) and return the list to you already formatted as the Adobe PDF file mentioned above, ready to print.
