Williston Economic Development
by Barb Peterson
Researchers have done their job. Potato breeders from North Dakota State University (NDSU) and the University of Minnesota (UM) have identified a number of potato varieties that thrive in the Mon-Dak Region-and producers are growing them. The next step is to attract a processor. "Having variety trials is all well and good-but it takes the initiative of somebody to see the value of the product and move it to market," said UM Potato Breeder, Christian Thill, during the Mon-Dak

Energy (Sugar)beets May Be Next Big Ethanol Crop
Farm and Ranch Guide |
Jamestown, N.D. businessman Maynard Helgaas, has been working with the Green Vision Group (GVG) to develop an energy beet processing plant. Helgaas said sugarbeets were selected for the study because of their high energy content and the fact that they are so adaptable to North Dakota. "Making ethanol from sugarbeets is a very efficient process," he said. "It takes less energy than (converting) corn and produces twice the ethanol per acre than corn." See Entire Story.

Study: Beets Hit Hard in Carbon Tax Scenario
AGWEEK |
U.S. sugar production will decrease "substantially" if carbon emissions are taxed at projected rates, says a new analysis by the Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo. Richard "Skip" Taylor and Won W. Koo at NDSU calculate that the U.S. cane sugar would decline slightly under "cap-and-trade" or carbon tax rules. Mexican sugar imports would increase, but the majority of imported sugar will come from other countries. See Entire Story. |

Biodiesel Plant Running "Intermittently"
Capitol Press |
Governmental delays have forced an Odessa, Wash., biodiesel plant to drastically reduce its production schedule, the general manager said. Giant Worm Gets Another Shot at ESA List
Capitol Press |
Despite a recent setback, the giant Palouse earthworm is still a contender for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that the rare annelid, which may grow up to three feet long, warrants further study for possible inclusion on the list of endangered and threatened species. Agricultural interests worry that federal protection for the species could result in restrictions on farmers. "This could be a threat to the livelihood and the makeup of the Palouse itself," said Travis Jones, executive director of the Idaho Grain Producers Association. See Entire Story. |
