Keynote Speaker Spotlight |
Diane Nilan
Diane is the Founder and President of HEAR US Inc. ( www.hearus.us) and has over 25 years experience working with impoverished and homeless families. Since 2005, Nilan's cross-country journeys to non-urban communities have focused on poverty and homelessness, particularly for invisible families and teens. She filmed the award-winning series of documentaries, My Own Four Walls, children and youth sharing how homelessness upends their lives and their education. Her reader-friendly book, "Crossing the Line: Taking Steps to End Homelessness," gives unique insights into homelessness. Her latest production, "REACH" empowers incarcerated parents to advocate for their homeless children's educational rights. And she is working on a feature-length documentary, "It's All About the Children" that looks at families in and beyond homelessness. Her latest and most ambitious venture, utilizes YouTube to connect families and teens in doubled up and/or motel situations with their federal legislators, and encourages local media to explore this under-regarded form of homelessness. Her project, Learning Curve Express, will find Diane and her RV in new territories, perhaps as far as Alaska.

FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR |
|
Katheryn Preston |
Dear Members and Supporters,
We are very excited about all the new developments here at the Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness (GCEH). With the economic turmoil creating operational hardships on our members and partners we have shifted into over-drive to boost programming support and technical assistance to our statewide network of service providers. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities over the coming weeks and months to build your capacity and strengthen your organization's technical skills. Our goal is to grow Georgia's best practices service delivery programming. In addition to these Continuum of Care supports we have also nurtured formal partnerships with several National organizations to bring Georgia the most up to date information, training and technical assistance opportunities. Additionally we will receive and have access to expertise and research opportunities. It is with great pleasure that we have support from the National Alliance To End Homelessness, The National Center For Family Homelessness and The Institute For Children and Poverty. Support from these outstanding national organizations will be invaluable as we build Georgia's capacity and increase homeless service performance. Our organization will soon be restructured to best meet the needs of our members and supporting agencies. The GCEH staff and board are committed to provide quality trainings and support while we enhance our delivery of coordinated case management referral services to those in need. We appreciate your dedication, cooperation and collaboration of the organizations and individuals in our network and ask for your continued partnership as we overcome the challenges facing homeless prevention and service delivery in the us in the year to come.
Thank Again For All You Do
Sincerely,
Katheryn Preston

GCEH Launches Campaign To End Family and Children Homelessness
On November 4, 2009 the Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness joined forces with the Regional Commission To End Homelessness, the National Center on Family Homelessness, the National Alliance to End Homelessness and a host of other Georgia service providers and advocates to officially launch Georgia's Campaign To End Family and Children Homelessness.
Participants and experts from around Georgia convened to address the needs and issues of Georgia's ever increasing homeless family and youth population and concerns regarding the recent National Center on Family Homelessness report, America's Youngest Outcasts-State Report Card on Child Homelessness announcing the State of Georgia as 49th in the nation in services to homeless children and youth. "The Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness is committed to addressing the needs of homeless youth and is delighted to be able to work in conjunction with such outstanding organizations to bring the issues of youth homlessness to the forefront ". said Katheryn Preston, Executive Director of the Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness. Protip Biswas, Executive Director with the United Way Regional Commission on Homelessness also stated in a press release that "Homelessness is something that no one in our community should have to experience - certainly not our young people."
Over 100 organizations were represented at the Summit. Attendees participated in work groups and shared information that will be assembled into a summary report that will be used to create Georgia's Homeless Family and Youth Agenda at the 2010 Annual Conference on March 3-5, 2010.

GCEH Partners With New Volunteer Rewards Program
The Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness (GCEH) has been searching for a new an innovative way to reward those volunteers that give so much to our organization. With non-profit funding falling far short of the amounts needed to operate programs and pay staff, it has become extremely difficult to recognize one of our most valued assets, our volunteers. Those dedicated individuals and groups that provide the necessary manpower to keep our programs operating. The people that give generously of their valuable time and resources and without whom, many of our organizations could not keep our doors open.
With that in mind GCEH is excited to partner with Tammy Allen, the Founder and CEO of the Do Good Get Rewards Program to offer this exciting program to our network. The Do Good Get Rewards Program is a volunteer rewards program created to recognize and reward the valued people who give so unselfishly of themselves. This wonderful program provides non-profit organizations with a simple, free way to show appreciation to their volunteers and provide incentives to grow their volunteer base. At Do Good Get Rewards, non-profit organizations validate volunteer hours as quickly as accepting friends on Facebook. Volunteers earn points for the hours they work and redeem them for featured rewards such as vacations, gift cards, and hotel and restaurant certificates. There is absolutely no cost to Non Profits, Members or Product Partners to join the program. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to recognize and reward those invaluable volunteers that keep our organizations running at full steam.

Annual Conference Begins Georgia Non-Profit Capacity Building Thrust
The Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness Annual Conference and Learning Institute will be the launching pad for a statewide initiative to bring capacity building technical assistance and resources to Georgia's non-profit service providers. GCEH has formed partnerships with Convergent Non-Profit Solutions and the Center for Capacity Building at the National Alliance Top End Homelessness to bring a wealth of organizational capacity building, sustainability and rural capacity building to homeless service organizations and communities. GCEH will be focusing capacity building initiatives with these two new projects:
Project # 1 - Organizational Capacity Building - Building Your Organizations Value
Overview
Mastering Outcomes Learn how to capitalize on your organization's outcomes using our Investment-Driven Model™. This session is an introduction to the proven system that unlocks the value that you deliver and communicates your outcomes in terms that potential investors understand and appreciate.
Organizational Value Proposition® Basics Demonstrating the value of the good work you do has never been more important, especially in today's economic environment. OVP is the ROI (return on investment) of the nonprofit world, where the effective communication of meaningful, measurable results leads to more and larger investments.
Fundraising Foundations Build a solid foundation for successful long-term fundraising using our Investment-Driven Model™. Develop the campaign structure, leadership roles, benchmarks, and funding message that resonate with today's funders. This session includes the two critical components of a successful funding effort: the feasibility study and the campaign itself.
Using ROI as a Funding Advantage Capture the attention of potential investors, especially during these difficult economic times, by developing your organization's ROI and putting it to work in a funding context. Craft a program of work that respects your mission and provides potential investors with a reason to invest using specific ROI scenarios.
Developing Asking Rights Why do some nonprofits get funded and others don't? Become successful at demonstrating your organization's value to investors and using it as an effective funding tool by developing your "asking rights." This session will focus on developing a consistent "ask" message that resonates with today's nonprofit investors.
Project # 2 - Rural Georgia Capacity Building Community Level Support
Overview
The Center for Capacity Building supports the National Alliance To End Homeless' mission to end the problem of homelessness by building the capacity of communities to respond to new and emerging challenges and opportunities. Our approach to rural capacity building is outcome-based, with a clear focus on having a measurable impact in communities. The National Alliance To End Homelessness will work in partnership with the Georgia Coalition To End Homelessness and communities in Georgia to build capacity in three ways:
Systems Change - The Center for Capacity Building is available to help rural Georgia communities develop plans and implement strategies to transform their homeless systems at the state, county, and city levels. We achieve this goal in communities through a combination of political will-building strategies, planning support, and training for key stakeholders responsible for systems-level change.
Organizational Change - Systems change will eventually lead to organizational change. Organizations often find themselves in need of support to re-align their staff, develop internal program plans, and train staff on their new roles and responsibilities. The Center for Capacity Building can help organizations with these issues as well as others, including building new partnerships and developing outcome-based performance measures.
Practice-Level Skill Building - Organizations change when the individuals in those organizations have the skills to change. The National Alliance To End Homelessness works within an organization or with groups of organizations to develop their skills on the front line. This includes training case managers on new models and strategies for providing services in a rapid re-housing context or increasing staff effectiveness at conducting landlord outreach and securing housing for families that enter their program.Processes of these programs will be introduced at the GCEH Annual Conference and Learning Institute, LEADING THE WAY - GEORGIA"S CAMPAIGN TO END HOMELESSNESS, March 3-5, 2010.
