Greetings!
We are happy to be able to bring you the latest updates on hoof care, from the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry. It has been a busy year despite the slowing economy. Perhaps the weak economy has brought to light the importance of being proactive in our hoof care programs or perhaps more people are acting on their desire to work at a profession that brings them great satisfaction. Whatever the reason, attendance to our courses has grown, and the number of qualified Applied Equine Podiatrist around the world has increased steadily. Our presence in France has increased dramatically, and we are pleased to see so many new graduates in that country. A list of our graduates around the world is posted to our web site. We now have graduates in ten countries!
Enjoy this month's newsletter, and accept our invitation to join us in our quest to provide all horses with the best in hoof care possible. We want your next ride to be your Best Ride!
Sincerely,

Hoof Balance The Effects on Meridian Function as a Result of Equine Foot Function
A recently completed study relates hoof balance to acupressure. Acupressure, like acupuncture is a modality that enables us to take action on specific points located near the surface of the skin, that are measurable by scientific instrumentation demonstrating a change of electrical resistance at these sites. What the Chinese call life force or Chi (Qi), is responsible for maintaining energetic balance and normal body functions, and passes through the body in an electrical fashion. The Qi is transmitted through the body through specific channels or meridians, of which there are twelve major and two extra. Any blockage or interruption to this flow of Qi will result in imbalance or malfunction of the body. The goal of acupressure and acupuncture is to remove the blockage and restore energy flow, allowing the body to regain balance or homeostasis and ultimately heal itself (taken from "Wholistic, Therapies & Detox for the Equine Foot", Helena Das, DVM, IAEP, Level 2).
The Study
Beverly London, DVM, and Brian Smigielski, DAEP, conducted a study to compare the effects the HPT Method and Traditional trimming might have on Meridian Function. This was accomplished by measuring meridian function at twelve ting points around the coronary band on sixteen horses. Applied Kinesiology was used in this assessment and the researchers came to an astonishing conclusion; the application of the HPT Method for at least 10 months resulted in optimal meridian function in 90 - 100% of the twelve meridian channels. In comparison to those horses trimmed by traditional methods and showing mediolateral and dorsopalmar imbalances which accounted for the results showing depressed meridian functions. When the HPT Method was applied to these horses, hoof balance was restored resulting in increased meridian function.
Implications
This study supports KC La Pierre's theories on coronary band and ungular cartilage function. KC has always taught that we should be balancing the hoof capsule to the foot within. New findings continue to direct where modern hoof care needs to go, and Applied Equine Podiatry is on the fast track to getting you there.
You can learn more about this important work, while learning first hand how you can provide the best hoof care for your horse, simply by attending a horse owner workshop presented by the Institute.

| Education Saves
Hoof care has always been portrayed as a necessary cost in horse ownership. This is only a truth if you leave the task of proper hoof care totally up to someone else. The facts have become very clear, if you take an active role in your horse's hoof care program, you will save a considerable amount of money over the life of your horse, not just in trimming cost, but also in veterinary cost. You will also have far fewer heartaches over the long haul, and the truth is that most of us are in it for the long haul. Our horses are our family, and we would no more skimp on our kids health care than we would our horses.
It is fact that neglecting proper hoof care can be very costly. I'm not suggesting that any of you would neglect your horse's hooves, what I am saying is that passing all the responsibility of hoof care off to someone that does not keep you involved in the process can be disastrous. No one knows your horse better than you do, and with the proper education, you could work right along side a hoof care professional, providing optimal care for your horse's hooves. Our graduates (DAEP) find great satisfaction in caring for horses, and they enjoy sharing the satisfaction of accomplishment with their clients. Investments in education never goes unrewarded. Learning how to implement Applied Equine Podiatry into your hoof care program can save you money, and increase the enjoyment of horse ownership.
The Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry is happy to offer a substantial discount to first time students attending the December 2010 Old Town Florida course. If you have ever had the desire to take responsibility for your horse's hoof care, and have wanted to learn how to trim your horse's hooves correctly, this is your chance. Enjoy sunny Florida in December, and receive five full days of hoof care education, including extended hands-on trimming. You will not be disappointed. You will leave the course equipped with the tools needed to provide your horse with the best in modern hoof care. See side bar for details.
