| Greetings! | Happy Groundhog day. Here's a brief update from your pals on Clement Street, including:
- an invitation to the SF Antiquarian Book, Print, and Paper Fair (this weekend)
- an opportunity for you to give away 20 free brand-new books via World Book Night;
- author events to get you out of the house and into a good book;
- and a few quick links to bookish delights online.
In the store, our 2012 calendars are almost gone (though we have a handful left at 50% off). So our children's and young adult sections have expanded further still, so stop by and see what's new.
And remember--if you're into e-reading, you can buy eBooks from Green Apple for almost any device (except e-ink Kindles), usually at prices that match our online competitors. Everything you need, including title suggestions to get you started, is here.
E-books or print books, it doesn't matter to us how you read. We're here to share our mutual passion for books.

SF Antiquarian Book, Print, and Paper Fair
|
The most unique books in our store are going on a short road trip to the Concourse Exhibition Center this weekend. Even if you're not a collector, lookie-loos are welcome. (If you DO buy something, mention that you're a Green Apple newsletter subscriber, and we'll give you 10% off.)
Over 200 dealers from all across the globe will be hawking their wares, and Green Apple Books will bring the best of our best to Booth 312. What is the best of our best, you ask? How about a batch of Arion Press titles, including The Great Gatsby and Coney Island of the Mind; The Variorum Edition of the Poems of W.B. Yeats, SIGNED by Yeats; The deluxe edition of Danny Lyon's Knave of Hearts, limited to 50 copies, and including a SIGNED print; SIGNED first editions from Ansel Adams, Haruki Murakami, Wayne Thiebaud, Maurice Sendak, Edward Abbey, Tasha Tudor, Robert Crumb, and many others. Did I say dazzling? I do believe that I did. But without a doubt, my personal favorite is the true first edition of Ambrose Bierce's landmark story collection, Can Such Things Be? published in 1893. Oh, wait - maybe it's the hand-numbered copy of Raymond Pettibon's Pig Cupid. No, it would really have to be the beautiful, SIGNED first edition of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - man, what a way out signature. Please slide by Booth 312 and say "Hi" - show hours are from 10 to 7 on Saturday, Feb. 4th and from 11 to 5 on Sunday the 5th. Free appraisal service on-site Sunday, and a discounted admission coupon is available HERE. We also have three free passes to give away. Email Kevin, and he'll randomly pick three winners on Friday at noon (he'll email you if you win). |

World Book Night 2012
| More or less the entire book industry, Green Apple included, is supporting World Book Night on April 23. Here's more from their site:
We need book-loving volunteers to fan out across America on April 23, 2012! Just take 20 free copies of a book to a location in your community, and you just might change someone's life. Please sign up by Feb. 6 EST at midnight.
The goal is to give books to new readers, to encourage reading, to share your passion for a great book. The entire publishing, bookstore, library, author, printing, and paper community is behind this effort with donated services and time. The first World Book Night was held in the UK last year, and it was such a big success that it's spreading around the world! Please volunteer to be a book giver in the U.S. Sign up now to be a book giver. Or see the books here. |

February 26: Michael Lerner's Embracing Israel/Palestine: a Strategy to Heal and Transform the Middle East
In our first partnership with St. James Episcopal church a few blocks away, author and Rabbi Michael Lerner will be speaking about his new book, Embracing Israel/Palestine. Lerner emphasizes that a new approach to the issue requires giving primacy to love, kindness, and generosity. It calls for challenging the master narratives in both Israel and Palestine as well as the idea that "homeland security" can be achieved through military, political, economic, or media domination. His presentation is sure to be insightful, inspiring, and thought-provoking. Details: Sunday, February 26. 11:30am @ St James (4620 California St @ 8th). Free. ----------
February 23-26: JCC's Bookfest
The JCC presents an enviable line-up of authors, artists, performances, and more. Think Peter Orner, Miranda July, Ben Katchor, Nicole Krauss, Phillip Levine, Joyce Carol Oates, and more. And Green Apple will be there selling books, so there'll be a familiar face. Buy tickets here.

Bookish tidbits
|
The most "Likes" we've ever gotten on our Facebook page, by far, is this brief entry from a fine Green Apple bookseller, so we' thought we'd pass it along. Feel free to "Like" us here. A little customer who I've seen come into the store strapped to his father's back every Wednesday night since I've worked here just spoke to me for the first time. He sa id "bookstore." Dad says he's turning two tomorrow. Heart: warmed.----------
Over on our blog is some love from us to you. It's an update on our Apple-a-month subscription program--so many subscribers live elsewhere. That post is here and the blog is here. ----------
