Jonathan Safran Foer
at the JCC, on Eating Animals
foer
Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir and his own detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits - from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth - and how such tales can lull us into a brutal forgetting.

It's been quite a ride since we hosted Mr. Foer at the old Canvas Cafe on 9th Avenue when his first book, Everything Is Illuminated, was published in 2002.   We're pleased to welcome him back.

Mr. Foer will be speaking and signing books at this event at the JCC. Green Apple Books will not be selling tickets to this event. You can learn more and get tickets here at the JCCSF website.

Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks
Ethan Gilsdorf at Green Apple Books
fantasy freaks
Get out your twelve-sided die! In an enthralling blend of travelogue, pop culture analysis, and memoir, forty-year-old former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds--from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, Planet Earth to the realm of Aggramar. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in our online gaming future, he asks gaming and fantasy geeks how they balance their escapist urges with the kingdom of adulthood.

You can ask Mr. Gilsdorf about his hit point count and choice of warrior class on Tuesday, November 10th at 7 pm. No mead allowed, alas.

Woody LaBounty
on Carville by the Sea

Carville

Carville-by-the-Sea: San Francisco's Streetcar Suburb, a new book by Woody LaBounty, vividly recalls one of the quirkiest communities in San Francisco's rich history.

In the mid-1890s, San Francisco transit companies started selling surplus horse cars and cable cars to the public--$20 with seats intact, $10 without.

Obsolete public transportation soon became bars and restaurants, shoe repair shops, playhouses, laundries, artists' studios, and even houseboats.

A bohemian settlement erupted at the beach as writers, judges, and lady bicyclists arranged, combined, and even stacked old transit cars to create "Carville-by-the-Sea."

Meet the author (and keeper of the historical website Outsidelands), and get an awesome history lesson here at Green Apple Books.
