Come back. We miss you.

Greetings!
Hi. We have some fun for you today. And the fall new releases have started pouring in as the fog thins, so it's a great time to visit Green Apple. To tempt you in. . . .
First, our Book of the Month: The Big Rewind by Nathan Rabin. Got 60 seconds for an entertaining video promoting said Book of the Month? Good, it's here. Or see Roman's blurb below.
Also below, we present some new book releases we're stoked about (all with free shipping), like the new Thomas Pynchon and Richard Russo novels that arrived this week.
In case you haven't been following our blog, be sure to check out our ten-part video Smackdown pitting Amazon's Kindle e-reader thingy against The Book. Ten short videos to educate, sure, but mostly to entertain. We've had a great response to them, so we're sure you'll enjoy them. Six Rounds have been posted so far. Here are links: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5 (my personal favorite), and Round 6.
We have two interesting events in August that you shoud note: David Suisman here at the store and the Literary Death Match at the Elbo Room.
And this month we're teaming up with our pals at the Balboa Theater to offer you deals, prizes, and more. See below for details.
And our blog thrives. Check it out, or follow us (very occasionally) on Twitter. Thanks, as always, for reading. --Pete et al. |
"A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought
without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will
go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a
man's mind can get both provocation and privacy." ~Edward P. Morgan |

August's Book of the Month
Each month, Green Apple presents a Book of the Month, a brand-new book that we're so crazy about, we passionately guarantee it 100%.
August's selection is The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought to You by Pop Culture.
Here's our video pitch, with its usual mix of information and mirth.
And here's Roman's written pitch:
"This isn't just your average pop culture memoir peppered with
references and snark-- while that's expected of Rabin, one of the head
writers of the Onion's notorious AV Club, The Big Rewind
is the surprisingly moving story of Rabin's tumultuous childhood, his
upbringing through various group and foster homes, reconnecting with
his father, and how becoming a critic actually saved his life. Through
it all, Rabin's writing is hilarious, and, most importantly, genuine.
--Roman Honeycutt And this book is guaranteed 100%. You'll love it or we'll give you your money back. And apologize.

Green Apple & Balboa Theater team up
Green
Apple Books is thrilled to be working with The Balboa Theatre on a
couple of upcoming movie releases, both of which enjoy bookish ties.
Beginning on August 7th, and continuing at least through August 27th, the Balboa will be showing Julie & Julia (based partly on the life and cooking of Julia Child).
And opening Friday, August 14 will be Ponyo (the new animated smash from Hayao Miyazaki of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away fame).
During
that time, if you bring a receipt from Green Apple Books ($10 min
purchase) to The Balboa, you will enjoy a bag of popcorn on the house with the purchase of admission to any film.
And if you bring your ticket stub from either film into Green Apple, we will offer either of two discounts: a stub from Julie & Julia
will get you 20% off a single purchase of new or used cookbooks (no
limit on quantities), OR the stub from Ponyo will save you 20% off any new or used commix/graphic novels.
Green Apple and the Balboa Theater will also be giving away a big Julie & Julia gift
bag as part of a special drawing at the Balboa. Other prizes include an
Alice Waters cookbook personally autographed to the winner, tickets
to SOUTH PACIFIC and much more. Enter to win at the Balboa.
Books, popcorn, and the lowest movies prices in town. . .at the locally owned Balboa Theatre.
The Balboa Theatre: 3630 Balboa (at 37th Avenue) www.balboamovies.com for more details.

David Suisman: August 12th
Are you curious what sordid things transpired when the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso visited the Monkey House at the Central Park Zoo in 1906?

Well, come on down to Green Apple Books at 7pm on Wednesday, August 12, and find out.
Author David Suisman will be having a reading and book signing for his recently published book Selling Sounds: The Commercial Revolution in American Music, and he just may spill the whole inside story of the Monkey House Incident.

Literary Death Match
Green Apple is one of several local bookstores asked to send a representative author to Opium magazine's Literary Death Match on August 14th at the Elbo Room.
Never been? The Literary Death Match is something like "author reading meets American Idol," with writers, judges, and an often-salty audience.
We're honored to be represented by now-local (ex-Portland, OR) author Paul Neilan, author of one of best-selling novels at Greem Apple in the last few years, Apathy and Other Small Victories. For details or advance tickets, go here. We hope to see you there. Go, Paul, go! |
