Come on in!
 |
Greetings!
Hi. Much to tell you, so let's get right to it.
First, our Book of the Month: read the blurb to be assured that this book is NOT just for film buffs. But Herzog fans will certainly love both the book and our latest video. See them both here.
Also in today's newsletter below, we present some new book releases we're stoked about (all with free shipping), like the new Dave Eggers that arrived today. And three unique July author events, one of which includes a very special prize for a few lucky winners. Enter to win.
Plus, two sales here at our stores: this weekend only, a bin sale (25% off the already wicked low prices) and our continuing new DVD sale (10%-50% off all new DVDs, even box sets).
And freshly arrived sale books; a featured Mystery author; a link to Kevin's KFOG picks this month and a coupon in support of creepshow camp!
And our blog thrives. Check it out, or follow us (very occasionally) on Twitter.Read whatever strikes your fancy. Pass on the juicy parts to your pals. And we hope to see you in the store soon, perhaps to celebrate your "independents" this weekend?
Thanks, as always, for reading. --Pete et al. |

July's Book of the Month
Almost every month, we present a Book of the Month, a brand-new book that we're so crazy about, we zealously guarantee it 100%.
The Green Appler who selected this month's pick went so far as to grow a moustache for our "commerical." See it here.
Then read Conquest of the Useless.
Here's Stephen's pitch:
The making of Werner Herzog's 1982 film "Fitzcarraldo," which tells
the story of an opera lover obsessively intent on amassing a fortune in
rubber in order to build an opera house in the Amazon jungle, has been
documented in Les Blank's documentary "The Burden of Dreams". In that
film, Fitzcarraldo's quest is conflated with Herzog's - that of hauling
a 360-ton ship over a steep slope from one river to another using only
primitive tools. After watching the documentary, the viewer is
justified in wondering if the mad one is the fictional Fitzcarraldo or
the implacable Herzog.
The shooting of "Fitzcarraldo" was plagued from its inception by a
series of disasters - threats of war and rumors and allegations about
Herzog's true intentions in the jungle nearly stopped production before
it even began. Plane crashes (yes, plural); attacks by hostile tribes;
severe illnesses; actors deserting the film; financial difficulties; a
malevolent jungle that seemed intent on eradicating all human life; and
death disrupted filming once underway. Through it all Herzog remained
unshakable, certain that to abandon the project would be a "disgrace so
great that sin itself wouldn't be able to find a name for it".
The Conquest of the Useless is composed of the journal Herzog
kept during the making the film. He claims to have been unable to look
at this journal for 25 years, such was the toll the process took. I
don't need to proselytize to Herzog admirers, but for those with little
knowledge or only casual interest in the film, I will make my pitch for
why I believe this work should be read by more than film buffs (which I
do not consider myself):
The Conquest of the Useless may not be a light read. It demands
attention and possibly courage to read it. I will attest, however, that
its riches are immeasurable. It lays bare the doubts, fears and
psychological fortitude of one of the great artists and noble dreamers
of our time. Herzog's vivid descriptions of the jungle, its indigenous
inhabitants and a rapidly vanishing world rival that of the best travel
writer or journalist. His prose is clear and often downright funny.
(The absurdity of his situation was not lost on Herzog.) It is in many
respects a classic adventure story, complete with something resembling
a happy ending. . . .
Above all, it speaks to the conflicted dreamer in all of us that cries
out for us to attempt our own impossible conquest, whatever the cost.
It's not every day that a book comes along that promises that.
Especially not a book that is guaranteed. --Stephen Sparks

Author Events: Russell Hill, Lev Yilmez, and Bix (with a raffle!)
Green Apple is producing three diverse author events in July. Here's a quick summary of each, or see them all here. Please join us in keeping the written word LIVE. July 16: Russell Hill at Green Apple.
Local author Russell Hill will be reading from his recently released novel, The Lord God Bird, a sinister novel of ornithological obsession set in the Bayou Country of 1949. As with his previous two books, The Search For Sheepheaven Trout, and the Edgar Award nominated Robbie's Wife, The Lord God Bird is strongly informed by its mise-en-scene, which we are sure Mr. Hill will be happy to discuss, so please drop on by.
Details: Thursday, July 16 @ 7pm in Green Apple's Side Room. Free.

July 16: Lev Yilmaz at the 540 Club. Right after our Russell Hill event, San Francisco filmmaker/animator/author Lev Yilmaz will be at the ol' 540 Club presenting his latest book, Sunny Side Down, a collection of his acclaimed Tales of Mere Existence strips and stories. We'll also be showing some of Lev's shorts from the animated Tales series!!
You can check out some of his awesome videos here. Then read his blog here. And if that ain't enough Lev for ya, you can find more strips and movies here. This
event is free (um, until you order a beer) at our neighborhood bar just down the block from us at 540 Clement St. 8:00 p.m.

Featured Mystery Author: Christopher Fowler
A newish employee (Martin) is a big mystery reader, and we quickly went from not carrying this author to selling piles of his books. Tempted?
Martin says:"I've been a fan of Christopher Fowler since the early nineties, and am
very pleased to see his books finally developing a following in
America.
"The Bryant and May mysteries take place in London, featuring a
pair of septugenarian detectives who are part of London's "Peculiar
Crimes Unit". What makes these books such a joy is Christopher
Fowler's knowledge of London and its history, legends, and geography.
In these books the city of London itself becomes one of the main parts
of the stories, with Fowler contrasting the transformation of the old
London of legend into the new modern day London.
"Although this is a
series, there are two books one can start with, either Seventy-Seven Clocks, which
takes place before the series, or Full Dark House, which 'officially'
begins the series. I love these books, and never hesititate to
reccomend them to anyone within earshot of the mystery section. He also
has one of my favorite author websites here."

Help us Help Creepshow Camp!
Young devotees
of Horror, Sci-Fi and Suspense finally have a summer camp to call their own,
and Green Apple Books is delighted to help.
At Creepshow Camp, kids 10 and up face
"fright" with curiosity and creativity, revealing the secret techniques behind
scary entertainment's vitality and power. Workshops led by The Thrillpeddlers' dedicated
staff engage participants, hands-on, in activities that teach and reinforce fundamental
skills in monster make-up, special effects, sleight of hand and stage
combat. In their theatre venue (The
Hypnodrome), campers rehearse on-stage for a farewell performance given for
family and friends at the end of every session. Four two-week sessions run through the summer: June 15 - 26, July 6 - 17, July 20 - 31, August 3 - 14, and Green Apple
is sponsoring as many kids as we can, but we can use your help. It's actually pretty easy.
Just print out the coupon at the
end of this month's newsletter, and bring it with you on your visit to Green
Apple this weekend (July 3rd - July 5th). You'll get 10% off your purchase, and we'll also donate 10% towards scholarships for Creepshow Campers. So please help Green Apple help others scare us.
Print the coupon. Bring it in July 3rd - July 5th. Accept your well deserved thanks from us, and
Thrillpeddlers!
