Greetings!
Warm greetings from Clement Street. So many good books pouring in. . . .can't keep up. . . can't manage complete sentences or undorky salutations. . . .Ahem. Sorry. I've been flirting with Twitter (but so far unwilling to, um, tweet; can you please email me if you see any reason Green Apple should tweet, and, if so, what should we Tweet about?)
In today's newsletter below: our book of the month, a novel on the creative side (with its own video, the latest in Green Apple's efforts to remain entertaining); some new book releases we're excited about (all with free shipping!); two unique author events in the next two weeks. Some new gems for kids and young adults. Oh, and three new books for the surfer in your life.
And our blog continues to entertain both of its regular visitors. Why not become the third? We hope to see you in the store soon, and thanks, as always, for reading. --Pete et al. |

May's Book of the Month
Almost every month, we present a Book of the Month, a brand-new book that we're so crazy about, we zealously guarantee it 100%.
This month's book is The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet, a first novel by Reif Larsen.
Before we tempt you with our blurb, why not warm up with this very short video?
Here's why Nick thinks you should try this new novel:
"For a change, the Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data says it best; this book is about: 1. Child Cartographers - Montana - Fiction. 2. Voyages and Travels - Fiction.
But Also: 3. Continental Divides - Fiction. 4. Sparrows - Fiction. 5. Beetles - Tiger Monk Beetles - Fiction. 6. Girls - Girls Who Like Pop Music - Fiction.
And
Also: 7. Whiskey Drinking - Fiction. 8. Rifles - 1886 Winchester Short
Rifle .40-82 cal. - Fiction. 9. The Smithsonian Institution - Fiction.
10. The Megatherium Club - Fiction. 11. Hobos - Fiction. 12. Hobo Signs
- Fiction. 13. The Resilience of Memory - Fiction. 14. The Oregon Trail
Video Game for the Apple IIGS - Fiction. 15. Many Worlds Theory -
Fiction. 16. Honey Nut Cheerios - Fiction. 17. Smiles - Duchenne Smiles
- Fiction. 18. Lanyards - Fiction. 19. Food Pouches - Fiction. 20. The
Inheritance of History - Fiction. 21. Inertia - Fiction. 22. Wormholes
- Midwestern Wormholes - Fiction. 23. Mustaches - Fiction. 24. Parallel
Longing - Fiction. 25. Moby-Dick - Fiction. 26. Mediocrity - Fiction.
27. Rules - The Three-Second Rule.
Those are just a few of the
many aspects that make this book work so well. Plus, there's the appeal
of watching a genius kid hopping a freight train and seeing the world
for the first time. And there are the wonderful illustrations by Ben
Gibson & Reif Larson lining the margins of this book. Our heartiest
recommendation awaits those in search of a fun, creative novel."--Nick

Author Event: Lily Burana & Sugar Shack
Please join us when we take a field trip to the fabulous Hypnodrome Theatre on Thursday, May 14th to celebrate the newest book from Strip City's Lily Burana, entitled I Love a Man in Uniform. This
enchanting memoir finds Lily falling head over heals for an enlisted
man, and before you can say "Ten-Hut!" she's hitched and living at West
Point. So how does an ex-erotic dancer stay busy on a military base these days? Well it's quite simple really! She starts teaching the other wives the lost art of classic burlesque - gulp!
This free event will showcase Lily Burana in a theatrical setting, but she won't be alone. Joining
her for the evening will be San Francisco's own burlesque-troupe, Sugar Shack, performing and offering suggestions for other budding dancers. Door
prizes and a charity raffle (not to mention beer and wine) will round
out what is certain to be a book-signing like none that you've ever
been to before.
Slide by The Hypnodrome on Thursday, May 14th to see high and low cultures collide. There's
plenty of free parking, and it's the perfect excuse to discover (or
hopefully revisit) one of the coolest theatre spaces in the Bay Area. Plus, a signed copy of I Love a Man in Uniform would make the perfect gift for the one that you love.
Event Details: Lily Burana and Sugar Shack Thursday, May 14th 7-9 PM Hypnodrome Theatre 575 - 10th Street SF CA 94101

Author Event: Simon Read's War of Words
Join Green Apple Books as our intimate Side Room Series continues on May 20th, when we welcome local author Simon Read and his fantastic new book: War of Words: A True Tale of Newsprint and Murder.
Set during San Francisco's raging 'Barbary Coast' years, War of Words draws from newspaper accounts, diaries, and letters to tell the bloody tale of the birth of The San Francisco Chronicle and the feud between its founder, Charles de Young, and a golden-tongued preacher with a tainted past, Isaac Kalloch. Push quickly came to shove, which escalated into gunplay, leaving The City's streets red with blood. Both gripping and edifying, War of Words
illuminates San Francisco in all its pre-earthquake glory, while
proving once and for all that the 'good old days' weren't exactly that.
Meet Simon Read and enjoy selections from War of Words on May 20th at 7:00PM. Ask him questions, shake his hand, and get a signed copy for your collection! This
free event will be held in the second floor side room of Green Apple
Books. He will be reading, signing, and answering questions in our Granny Smith Room on Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm. |

New Books for Youngsters
From AeRi, the keeper of our kids and young adult sections, come these five recommendations:

Maika'i surf book update
With spring winds, little to no swell
in
the water, and the blah of fog approaching, perhaps you would rather curl up with a good book than drive up
and down the coast looking for that perfect south swell spot? Here are three good new books to help tide you over until September.
A biography of Miki Dora, aka "Da Cat." Insane.
A visual diary of the entire coast of CA. A perfect daydream of a book.
And an inspired portrait of Makaha--the spiritual home of Hawai'i's ocean-based culture. Fascinating.
Or see them all here.
