Spring forward with us.

Greetings!
Salutations, bibliophilic friends.
We, the owners of Green Apple, have lately spent too much time poring over month-to-month sales comparisons. No matter how you slice it, things are grim and our efforts to add a 29th day to February this year were met in Sacramento and Washington with little more than a dial tone.
But we march forth (it was almost the perfect pun--and the only day of the year that's a sentence--but I'm a day late, alas), pleased as punch to still be in business in such times as these. We really like our jobs, our staff, our customers, our "products," our neighborhood. And fear not: our store is a healthy business, if not exactly a high-growth industry, and we thank you, our most loyal readers and evangelical boosters, for making it so.
Following are the goodies herein: our book of the month, a new British novel about a Nigerian refugee; some new book releases we're excited about; an author event TONIGHT; and fresh arrivals on our sale tables. And our blog is up and running. The Book of the Month gets its own video again this month; it's surely our AV club's best effort yet. Click on this picture (and try not to laugh). We hope to see you in the store soon, and thanks, as always, for reading. --Pete et al. |

March's Book of the Month

Almost every month, we present a Book of the Month, a new book that we're so crazy about, we evangelically guarantee it 100%. This month's book is Little Bee by Chris Cleave. Here's Kevin H's recommendation:
"Little Bee should be the publishing sensation of
the season. This wonderful novel will appeal to readers of every type,
and infects all that read it with the undeniable need to pass it on
immediately. But this story develops in such a way, that saying
anything at all is a borderline spoiler. A beach in Nigeria, a
refugee, Batman. . . and yet it's nothing at all like you think.
"What I
can say is that Little Bee unfolds in a unique manner, and
that Cleave's narrative cunning is strong - I did everything I could to read this gem in one
sitting." --Kevin H.
Need more incentive? See our entertaining (if not terribly informative) video here. It's worth the 90 seconds, I swear.

Our blog awaits you
It took a long time to convince ourselves that we have anything unique to add to the gobs of information and entertainment currently online. We tend towards the humble, and when surrounded daily by 100,000 books, we wonder sometimes what is left to be explored, explained, said.
But we're more curious and adventuresome than humble, so we're taking a stab at blogging. And so far, so good, if I do say so myself. We have about three weeks' worth of entries, and we would GREATLY apppreciate any comments, suggestions, encouragement, discouragement, ideas, etc.
Entries so far include things like: a hopeful poem read over in-store video (our first post), how our new book buyer decides what books to carry, a "Why I Read" essay from Beth Lisick, Richmond district parking tips, a brief video interview with author Craig Clevenger, footage of a dragon in our store (really!), several entries about literature in translation, and much more. Oh, and you have to see our latest commercial about the Book of the Month. Once the author saw it, he called to tell us that Green Apple is his favorite bookstore that he has never been to (though he promised to stop by when in town on his book tour, so we should have signed copies soon!).

Event tonight! Noir at the Bar5 with Josh Bazell
Beat the Reaper has been quite the brisk seller at Green Apple Books since its release
in January (it was our first Book of the Month of 2009), so it's our great pleasure to welcome author Josh
Bazell to the 540 Club and "Noir at the Bar 5" tonight, Thursday, March 5th from 630-800pm.
Josh will be reading from and signing copies of Beat the Reaper, a darkly comic, modern crime tale set amidst the hustle and bustle of medical interns. And it seriously kicks *ss! In a big way! Think
Sopranos meets Grey's Anatomy after doing way too much cocaine, and
you've got a hint of the wild ride in store for you between the covers
of Beat the Reaper.
Meet the man behind Beat the Reaper (and why not buy him a drink) on Thursday, March 5th from 630-800pm at the 540 Club, when NOIR AT THE BAR turns 5. It's just a couple of doors up from Green Apple books and they always have $2.00 PBR, so there you go!

New Books We're Excited About; with free shipping!
After something of a post-holiday lull, really interesting new books are pouring in. Our display tables at the main store best present the variety we have pre-selected from the 1000s of books published each month, but to help you shop vicariously, we've selected a few to highlight today. Notable this month:
The compelling bio of cyclist Marshall Taylor; a guide to Banksy graffiti locations; a collection of Steiner' s New Yorker pieces; a new novel by a local Chinese-American; parenting vis-a-vis economics and game theory; a guide to urban homesteadin; a coffee table book on Pixar shorts; a fascinating book about the human brain; "art"fully packaged Spiegelman sketchbooks; and a novel on Nazi Germany with an amazing backstory. See our longer blurbs on each book here.
Also, three previous Book of the Month selections are just out in paperback: The Folded World, Sorrows of an American, and Lush Life. Free shipping (media mail in the USA) on any of these featured titles. Shop local first.
