Greetings!

I used to think books were kind of expensive.  Crown Books (remember them?) had the famous slogan "books cost too much."  Ten years ago a brand-new paperback novel cost about $11.00.  That same book would cost about $14.95 now.  But when you think about what you get for your entertainment dollar, no matter how you slice it, books are a great deal.  Movies?  Go see Twilight at the Kabuki and you'll pay $10.50 for a movie that will be over in 2 hours (and that's if you don't get popcorn, which you know you will, or pay for parking).  Video game? Halo 3 is going to put you out $40, and will rot your brain. TV? Even the most basic Basic Cable is $50 a month.

Plus a book is something that can be savored over the course of a couple of weeks, re-read if the feeling strikes, shared with a friend, and finally, sold or traded back to us.  Books are portable, don't need batteries or chargers, still work if you drop them in water or run over them with a car, and look nice on a shelf.

And of all the places you can buy a book, your money probably goes farther at Green Apple than anywhere else.  Let's start with our discounted new books: our hottest new arrivals (like the latest from Toni Morrison, Malcolm Gladwell, or Roberto Bolano) are discounted 20%. Next, check out our remainder tables: over 1,000 constantly changing titles are stacked on our sale tables at any given time.  These books are as-new fiction and non-fiction, art, cookbooks, children's, all priced at half of cover price or less.  And then there is our used book selection, overflowing with quality and value--many of our used books can pass for new!  Really on a budget this year?  You could do some pretty good holiday shopping out of our bins with bargain hardcover fiction, cheap kid's books and oversize coffee-table books.  Still too rich for your blood?  Our free box is regularly refilled with quality books that we just see too many copies of and can't use in the store.

And OUR gift cards will still be valuable a year from now (unlike Mervyn's, for example, which is selling gift cards while going out of business, or like the many companies that charge fees or otherwise diminish the gift card's value if you don't use it within a certain period of time.)  If worse ever came to worse and Green Apple ever did go out of business, your card would still work at any of the more than 380+ other indie bookstores that participate in the same gift card program, many of them in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

And we're more than "just a bookstore" if, woe is me, you have to buy gifts for non-readers: we offer the best calendar selection in the City, plus DVDs, CDS, blank books, cards, toys, games, stocking stuffers, and assorted goofy things, all quirky and fairly priced.

And finally, there's added value to shopping at locally owned independent stores like Green Apple.  Click here for ten reasons it's financially smart to re-invest in your local community.

Sincerely,

Pete et al
