I find television to be very educating.  Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.  ~Groucho Marx October 2008

Litquake
litquake2008
Litquake, the San Francisco Literary Festival that's now the region's largest literary event of the year, will rumble throughout the Bay Area this October 3-11.

More than 10,000 are expected to attend readings and performances by some of the biggest local and national literary stars, including Dave Eggers, Daniel "Lemony Snicket" Handler, Ann Packer, Curtis Sittenfeld, Dennis Lehane, Neil Gaiman, U.S. Poet Laureate Kay Ryan, Raj Patel, Beth Lisick, and actress and poet Amber Tamblyn.

We're especially excited about the opening night storytelling performance, Monday's Literary Death Match, and October 10th's Fabulous Femmes of Fiction event.

This is the ninth year for Litquake, a festival run by volunteers, with generous support from donors, education and arts organizations, authors, booksellers, publishers and the literary community.

October's Book of the Month!
Hurry Down Sunshine

On an almost monthly basis, we present to you a brand-new book that we're excited about. Really excited about: we guarantee it 100% or your money back.  Here's our ninth of 2008.  Nick explains:

"When Michael Greenberg's daughter Sally, at the young age of fifteen, suffers a psychotic breakdown, it threatens to tear apart the lives of those who love her. Hurry Down Sunshine is an elegant & tragic account of the quick downward spiral madness can take. Greenberg interweaves his story with that of Joyce & his daughter & the other patients in the psych ward. This book is a haunting & beautifully written study of madness & the suffering of a child whose family struggles to understand her. Immensely honest & personal, you will not be able to put this memoir down."

Author Events Green Apple style: Join us TONIGHT for a beer and a book on beer

Red, White, and Brew is the ultimate beer run across the United States, during which Brian Yaeger visits fourteen breweries of various sizes and talks to founders, owners, brewmasters, consumers, and anyone else he meets on his odyssey and who enjoys the making, tasting, and appreciating of brews.

Red, White, and Brew pursues the roots of brewers who brought their craft with them from their homeland and investigates how the tradition is faring today and where it may head in the future. Covering everything from fifth-generation family-run brewing companies to first-wave microbreweries, this book is a travelogue, guide, and genealogical study of beer families and homebrewers from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon. It is filled with eclectic characters and shrewd businesspeople who populate an industry as old as the New World, and who produce liquid philanthropy, one keg at a time.

Meet our neighbor, author Brian Yaeger, and enjoy a malted beverage of your choice just a few doors down from our store at the 540 Club (540 Clement).  8:00 p.m. TONIGHT, Thursday October 2.
malleus
Rock poster event

From Italy, the country that brought you spaghetti and spaghetti westerns, comes a new wave of beautiful handmade rock posters. MALLEUS Rock Art Lab, the artist collective of Urlo, Poia and Lu, a sensational poster design team from Italy, will be showing at The 540 Club on Thursday, October 16th from 7PM onward.

The Malleus collective is very excited to come to San Francisco, which they refer to as the "Capitol of Rock Posters;" and Malleus' growing number of fans here in the USA are excited to see their work and the artists live.  We'll have copies of their new book (The Hammer of God), too. Their brilliant posters from Italy, inspired equally by the fin de sicle style of Toulouse Lautrec and 1960's San Francisco Psychedelia, indicate that the present rock poster movement, which started in San Francisco, is sweeping the world.

Bucky Sinister Events

Says Bucky: "12-Step recovery was my last resort. I was highly cynical and skeptical of the whole community and process. But it worked for me. Since then, a lot of friends, friends of friends, and random strangers on MySpace have asked me how I reconciled my atheism and my creative life with sobriety and 12 Step. This book is all about that."

Here are two coming events Green Apple is co-sponsoring.

October 25th     Gilman Street Project
Bucky Sinister Presents Cleancore Punk:
"This show is a lineup of punk bands with members who are clean and sober. I'll do my readings first then hand it off to the bands. This is not a straight edge show, it's more of a cleancore show. The difference is that we are all punks who bottomed out, got clean and sober, and are back on stage rocking it harder than ever."
