Greetings!

Boy am I late in sending this.  That's a good sign: instead of filling your in-box with "Green Apple Rocks" propaganda, we've all been hard at work here making Green Apple an even better store--we've expanded by 25 cases, the books at our Warehouse Clearance Sale store are cheaper than ever (all used books there are $4.98 or less), and we have a few author events planned to entertain you in the coming week.

Also, we have two sunny offices for rent directly above our music and fiction annex.  So if you need office space and wish to be near all that Green Apple and Clement Street have to offer, here's your chance.  It's a perfect space for writers, artists, or anyone who needs to work outside the home (the offices could be shared, too).  More details below.

Oh, and we herein present our latest Book of the Month, a newly released book that we're crazy about.  This month's featured book is a page-turner of a travelogue about the lawless Sierra Madre of Mexico.  And it's a paperback original.

Thanks for reading and for all your support.

Author Event #1:
Lydia Millet

This Thursday, March 20, we're hosting author Lydia Millet.  Her newest novel is How the Dead Dream, a captivating novel about love, family, and money.

Ms. Millet is a PEN Award winner and staff member for the Center for Biological Diversity.  In this, her 6th novel, young real estate developer T.'s reverence for money and the institution of capital are turned on their heads when his upwardly mobile life is thrown into chaos. As he struggles to maintain his first relationship while keeping his unbalanced mother on an even keel, he slowly begins to lose control while beginning to nurture a curious obsession with rare and vanishing species. Soon, he's living a double life, building sprawling subdivisions by day, and breaking into zoos at night to be with animals that are the last of their kind.

Details: Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the 540 Club (just a few doors west of Green Apple at 540 Clement).

Author Event #2: Neil Strauss

rulesofthegameIn his international bestseller The Game, Neil Strauss delved into the secret world of pick-up artists--men who have created a science out of the art of seduction.

His new book, The Rules of the Game, takes you further into the seduction underworld than ever before: from accidentally getting married during a drunken night in Reykjavik, to luring a famous musician's granddaughter into a threesome; from conducting a keenly felt and tender relationship over email, to the stress and frustration of the torturous and highly unorthodox "30 Day Sex Experiment."

And it delves where The Game never dared to tread: the even more complicated rules of relationships.

We expect a big crowd, so we're hosting Mr. Strauss at the Rock-it Room, just a block away from our store.

DETAILS: Neil Strauss: Tuesday, March 25, 7:00 p.m. at the Rock-it Room (420 Clement Street at 5th Avenue).

Book of the month!

On a semi-regular basis, we present to you a brand-new book that we're excited about. Really excited about.  Here's our second of 2008, Richard Grant's page-turning non-fiction, God's Middle Finger: Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre.  It's a paperback original.  Kevin Ryan explains:

"
This travelogue opens with a harrowing scene of the author being hunted like a wild animal, hiding in scrub bushes as men with flashlights and guns seek him out.  He has wandered a little too far off the beaten path, to say the least.  "Why would anyone want to kill me?" he asks one of the men.  "To please the trigger finger," is the chilling response.  We spend the rest of the book learning how he got into this situation.  The short answer is that he ignored everyone's warnings and decided to travel the Sierra Madre's length North to South, starting a few miles south of the U.S. border and ending 700 miles later.  It is the birthplace of Poncho Villa and the last refuge of the Apaches.  It is crossed by few roads, and left to its own by the Mexican government.  Which might explain why the narco-traffickers have made such a happy home in its remote valleys. Along the way he "blasts parakeet" with some local drug dealers, samples some of the local folk medicine, and generally proves willing to follow the road wherever it leads. Ultimately, we realize that the reason Grant decided to go is a genuine love of Mexico and its people, and an innate drive to expose himself to the most ridiculous dangers, all for the benefit of us, the reader."

Should you need further tempting, here's a YouTube video on the book.

We guarantee this book 100%.  You can buy it in the store or online (HERE).

Offices for Rent above the store!
annexfrontoffice

Loyal customers sometimes tell us that they practically live at Green Apple.  Well, here's your chance to get one step closer.  We've moved some things around above our music and fiction annex, and we have two sunny offices for rent.

Both are south-facing, freshly painted, private offices (they're the bay windows in the storefront photo above).  One is 12 by 12 with a small closet; the other is 12 by 15.  We hope to rent to a writer (or a group of writers; the offices are big enough to share as long as you can get along with your office-mate).  The rooms would also make good art studios, thanks to the generous sunlight.  We even have a few old desks available for the right tenant.

We hope to rent one or both of these offices to someone in the extended Green Apple family, but if you know anyone looking for office space, please feel free to forward this to them.

If interested, send an email to pete@greenapplebooks.com

Yes, we moved stuff around again

Each spring, as our calendars sell down, we have room to expand selected book sections.  And this year, as we gained more space above our annex, we added another dozen cases in the Granny Smith Room.  Therefore, many of our sections have moved and expanded.  We gained 25 cases of books!  While we're still polishing up the labels and organization of the effected sections, please drop in soon to the see the widely expanded selection in areas like Leather-bound books, Philosophy, Young Adult Fiction, Travel, and more.

And if you feel lost next time you're in, please ask a Green Appler for help.  We did it all to provide you with more of what you want: good new and used books in all subject areas.
