"Grant yourself buoyant freedom from shoulds and, have-tos, since nothing clouds the inner knowing as thoroughly as inner hectoring."

~ Jennifer Louden in "The Life Organizer"

Over the weekend I was thinking about a class I took years ago where I was introduced to the concept that our language creates our reality - the idea that the words we choose matter a lot.  They can empower or disempower us, whether we are speaking them silently to ourselves or out loud to others.

Since that time, I've had the chance to observe the way that I and many others use our words.  Generally, if I listen to someone speak for a while I can gain a pretty clear picture of whether or not they see themselves as a proactive participant in creating their life path, or if they see themselves as a victim of external pressures.

The really exciting part of all this is, that by changing our language, we can actually make changes in how our brain functions and change the way we experience life.  How cool is that!

I often hear people say they "have to" this or the "should" do that.  Says who?  Words like this create internal pressure that doesn't support us in having a truly enjoyable life experience.  More empowering (and more true) statements are, "I choose to..." or "I'm going to..." do whatever it is.  Then take action or put it in your schedule.

It is also more empowering to say, "I'm choosing not to..." rather than keeping on with the "shoulds", "have-tos", for something you're not going to do anyway.  Just be honest about it, accept the consequences (if there are any) and move on.

The more we speak from a place of power and take ownership of how we speak about and live our lives, the more we come to know ourselves on a deeper level.  We are able to connect to our inner knowing, and make decisions that are more in alignment with who we are.

So, this week, if you hear yourself saying any "shoulds" or "have-tos" take a moment to pause and ask yourself what you "choose" to do.  It may be that you choose to take that action and it may be that you choose not to take that action.  Either way, practice honoring that choice and notice how that feels for you.

Wishing you a week filled with choices the empower you -
