Summer Travel Tips

With the busy summer travel season upon us, here are a few tips to help make planning your getaway a little easier.

Getting the Right Flight

Visit the Louisville International Airport (SDF) website at  to book your next flight to dozens of great vacation getaways-many with new nonstop service. Remember, if you can be flexible on your travel plans, you can save money.

Pack Light

The less you pack, the more money you may save as most airlines charge a fee for checked bags. Focus on the essentials when packing and consider purchasing items at your destination.

Arrive Early

With an increase in travelers expected during the summer months, be sure to arrive 1 hours prior to your scheduled departure, particularly during peak departure times. At Louisville International Airport, those peak periods are daily from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. For travelers' convenience, the TSA security checkpoint at Louisville International is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For additional TSA information, visit

Derby 2012 at the Airports

The 2012 Kentucky Derby was a busy time at Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field (LOU) as guests from around the world were welcomed to our city.

Louisville International

On Sunday after Derby, our airline partners scheduled more than 10,200 departure seats to accommodate departing Derby guests--about 60 percent more than are scheduled for a "normal" Sunday in May.

In addition, more than 600 corporate and other privately owned aircraft visited Louisville International from Wednesday through Sunday of Derby week with 290 on the ground at race time.

Bowman Field

For the second year, Bowman Field (LOU) hosted the Kentucky Derby Festival Great Balloon Rush Hour Race the weekend before Derby. At race time on Derby Day, Bowman Field hosted 118 general aviation aircraft--a 40 percent increase from last year.
