All of us at LiveConnections have a favorite Bridge Session by now. We look forward to the interactive performances; we love the energy of the students and adult participants as they're clapping and dancing along; we're constantly brainstorming ways to deepen our connections with schools and partnering organizations.
As we head into the final month of our season, we thought we'd share a few highlights from this school year:
|
|
1. New Sessions
November saw the return of our partnership with The Philadelphia Orchestra's School Partnership Program. Musicians and teaching artists collaborated to present five new sessions, with topics linking classical music to other styles and genres (Latin, pop, rock, jazz and spoken word, to name a few) and introducing basic elements of music. Many of the new sessions repeated in the spring so that more schools and organizations could take part.

2. Musical Connections
Every now and then a connection happens that we couldn't have anticipated. In February at "World of Percussion," we had such a moment when 5th graders from Grover Washington Jr. Middle School learned that percussionist Doc Gibbs [pictured] performed with Grover Washington Jr. himself for many years.
We also enjoyed an impromptu dance party with adult participants from Bancroft, Philadelphia Developmental Disabilities Corporation and the LIFE Program at the March "Dancing Vibrations" session. Turns out that violin, cello and percussion can create a toe-tapping medley of Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and Black Eyed Peas tunes.

3. Expanded Partnerships
We continue to grow our roster of participating schools and organizations in both Philadelphia and Wilmington. This school year, we have nurtured relationships with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture, Art-Reach, ArtsRising and Light Up the Queen Foundation, among others, and have welcomed students from homeschooling families, charter and independent schools and the Philadelphia, William Penn and Christina school districts. Nearly 4,500 K-12 students and adults with special needs have participated in Bridge Sessions this school year!
